Pretty straightforward. Were they?

I'd assume so.

I found this chart on a French site:

Man, those last 4 million fans are HARD CORE. Voyager even had trouble shedding them, and they're reluctant to leave ENT.

can't beleive DS9 had lost so many viewers...

I thought it one of the better series out of the 4

Wow - look at TNG. Its hilarious that such a average show was followed by such crap. You can even see the horrible 3rd season in there :)

The TNG ratings look like a side view of the Enterprise itself.

You did not just call TNG Season 3 "horrible".

season 1 was much, much worse than TnG season 3.

Season 3 had Cause and Effect, right? All the lamest episodes I remember are season 3. I think.

Whats interesting is that TNG lost ground initially (although the first two seasons were quite weak) but over 3-5 improved overall. None of the other franchises could do that: they only went down. Fast.

season 1 has the only episode in trek history that the actors requested be pulled from syndication. i'd say that gives it an edge over anything season 3 churned out.

Agreed. No wonder Berman and Paramount treated it like a bastard child; we knew better, of course...

"Cause And Effect" was season 5. "Transfigurations" would be an example of a lame season 3 entry.

Bosh, my TNG knowledge is gone. A curse, or a blessing?

TNG wasn't really that good, but ratings-wise it beats the shit out of everything else. Perhaps it was the last ST series watched casually, rather than mostly or entirely by fans?

And while Transfigurations is a shit shit SHIT episode, it is but ONE episode. Cause and Effect could be taken as an average sample of the season's quality, whereas Transfigurations cannot, considering it was rather atypical.

I cant believe all the series went down hill like that. I was never a big fan of TNG. I mean it was good through out all the seasons but some times it was just downright dumb like the writers had to much to drink.

As for Voyager i thought the show was actually better towards the end. The begging i though was the worse part with Tez all the time "Im gonna die, im gonna die, oh my god im gonna die".

DS9 was brilliant. It was like a soap opera but without the lame feel to it. It was about stories on a space station more or less. I got so sad when it ended. Thats still the show i miss the most.

And as for Enterprise i always thought it was great because it was the beggining journeys of the very first ship in Starfleet. But i guess the fans didnt or at least the viewers didnt.

I'm liking Seasons 3 and 4 of Enterprise more than several seasons of TNG and anything Voyager has ever did.

I thought the Dominion War stuff on DS9 did better? Odd.

DS9 Was not promoted well, and some Trekkies were offended by DS9's darker tone and storyline.

Offended? That sounds laughable. I think you mean "turned off."

Yeah god forbid that a ST series should show that some SF officers possess questionable moral character. And that they acually have an interesting story line.

As one of the lost viewers, all I can say is "Bajoran storylines suck."

Plus DS9 lost the "Which series is more Babylon 5ish?" storyline war to Babylon 5. Literally, if you wanted to watch the Dominion war, you would watch B5 to see how it was supposed to be done. 8)

However, DS9 actually was a good show. It just suffered from direct comparisons to the show that it was ripping all its fresh ideas off of. In syndication, it's much more easy to appreciate DS9 on its own terms.

Also, "The Visitor" is the best, most emotional Star Trek episode in the entire next generation ouevre. Damn is that Tony Todd a fine actor!

it was a bit hard to take DS9 seriously while it was being aired the same time that B5 was producing new episodes. especially when the B5 episode where they rescue B4 from exploding and sent it back in time in order to save the future was aired just a few weeks before the DS9 episode where the crew went back in time to save K7 from exploding in order to save the future struck me as one of the most oddly coincidental ones.

How can you compare those episodes?! B5's "War Without End" was a two-parter that was arguably the climax of the entire show, tied together all the plot threads from the first two and a half seasons and foreshadowed the rest of the series. DS9's "Trials and Tribble-ations" was a comedic tribute to TOS that served no higher purpose than showing Terry Farrell in a miniskirt (and a high purpose it was, indeed). Any resemblance was strictly coincidental.

From what I have picked up around the Web, it is possible, even likely that Paramount plagiarized JMS's original proposal to create the series bible of DS9, but after the show really began Ira Steven Behr and his writing team took the series in their own direction. It happened to run parallel in places to B5, but there was no direct theft.

Example: The Defiant and the White Star. One of the strangest coincidences between the two shows was the introduction in their respective season 3 premiers of a powerful new ship to fight a mysterious, dangerous enemy that was just emerging. But. The Defiant was introduced in fall of 94 while the White Star appeared in fall of 95. I don't believe that JMS's treatment of B5 was so detailed that it would have mentioned the White Star's introduction in Season 3, so the DS9 writers most likely came up with the Defiant on their own. So, either JMS stole the concept of the White Star from DS9 (silly) or it really was a coincidence, just like almost all the other parallels.
