Ok as a deployed solider I receive letters from students back state side. One of the person, moved from county to city, I talk to was telling me about his classmate. His classmate is always talking about PETA and there is a PETA organization at the school. He one day found them eating hamburgers in the cafeteria and when he asked them about it this is what they said. According to them hamburger is not an animal because their moms by it at the grocery store. So my pen pal being from the country precedes to tell them where and how hamburger is made. Now those those kids are boycotting the cafeteria even though they been eating the hamburger all year.

Idiocy abounds.

Perhaps they were in the better PETA before...

That's pretty dumb of them, although I have that belief that school cafeteria burgers either aren't actual animal products, or come from a part of the animal not even the animal wants.

In my Catholic school we had those crazy fake meat things that bounce when you throw them on the ground. Mmm mmm mmm...

Some people just aren't very bright at all. I mean, where the fuck do they think the meat comes from?

When I was three (or thereabouts) my parents told me that ham came from ham trees.

I remember hearing about the BBC show Panorama pulling an April Fool's by havin a program on spaghetti trees.

My high school's cafeteria served hamburgers that were probably only 20% meat. We weren't ever really sure what the rest of the burger was made of. I just remember they were gray looking even when fully cooked.

As for PETA... The PETA group at my university petitioned the administration successfully, so now half of the food in the main cafeteria is made of soy and other vegan-friendly items...grrrrr....

My school has something like that. I'm not sure what they're made of (I just hear other students muttering angrily about "soy"), but they're pretty tasty. And they're on the menu today. I think I'll go eat some dead cow now.

One of the nice things about living in a town in the country is that people don't have any weird delusions about where meat comes from. It comes from those cows you see everywhere.

and electrical power comes from wall sockets.

I too come from a small town, surrounded by townships full of farms. ...And you know you're from the middle of nowhere when you actually sit down and have a conversation with your friends about the art of cow tipping...

My daughter loves bacon and refuses to this day (she's 6) to believe they come from 'piggies'. She says I'm crazy. Go figure.

Now that takes a certain bit of just absurdity.

I understand Stravo's tale...heck somewhere in our youth we all likely have such a tale.

Given the university food I ate in first year (the taste still haunts me a decade later), this might be an improvement. I'm a simple guy - does something taste good - yes/no (I've now put an addendum to this - "relatively" healthy - to avoid the worst of the junk food). If yes, I'll gladly eat vegetarian. If no (think of boiled steaks - heresy at its worst), I don't care if product X is from a cow or a cabbage, I'll throw it out.

One word: bullshit. Seriously, there is no way this story is true; it sounds like somebody just engaging in a bit of one-upmanship with "dumb PETA" stories, especially with the idiotic bit about how city-dwellers don't know where burgers come from and can't read the word "MEAT DEPARTMENT" at the grocery store. Seriously, that's one of the oldest jokes country people tell about the city. If it's just a joke, that's fine (albeit really worn; a country bumpkin does not want to get a city-dweller started on the question of urban vs rural ignorance levels), but this person appears to be trying to pass it off as a real story.

you know I get a ton of them up here in the park, since we are a national park, we seem to be a magnet for all kinds of far left loonies. They have even invaded the medical clinic.

The fun part was me vs. the PETA nurse on why I stopped eating vegitarian.

Me: it's impossible to maintain a veggie and a diabetic diet.
Nurse: sure you eat (rattles off top things in veggie diets)
Me: Pasta=too much sugar, soy and lentils too much fat and colesterole, basically the best thing to eat is a chicken caesar salad no crutons, and no dressing (ever wonder what I eat 14 times a week?), and besides I am sure your going to complain next about my waste of petrochemicals in my suringes and lancets, or the fact that insulin is an animal product.

that last point kinda stunned her.

I tell people that the "hamburgers" are made of "imitation soy". Not soy masquerading as meat. Imitation soy. When people ask what that's supposed to be, I say it's bacteria grown in sewage sludge. The bacterial scum is skimmed off the top of the tanks and compressed into patties that pretend to be soy pretending to be meat. Nine out of ten poor college students can't tell the difference. (And ten out of ten people who hear that story order me to never tell it to them again.)

Hmm...I wonder if PETA would have a problem with people eating poor defenseless bacteria like that.
