From hereMELBOURNE (XFN-ASIA) - Eight people were killed and dozens injured in Australia's worst rail crash in 30 years when a truck collided with a passenger train collided at a level crossing, police said.
About 40 people were hurt, 12 seriously, when the semi-trailer cut the train in two as it crossed the Murray Valley Highway on its way to Australia's second biggest city Melbourne, police and passengers said.
The crash happened about 10 kilometers north of the town of Kerang in the north of the southeastern state of Victoria.
The train had left Swan Hill in the northwest of Victoria at 1:00 pm and was due to arrive at Southern Cross station in Melbourne at 5:09 pm, but was hit by the truck about 40 minutes into the journey.
The country's worst train disaster occurred in the Sydney suburb of Granville in 1977, when 83 people died after a commuter train derailed and crashed into a road bridge.
Not a patch on some of the third world wrecks you hear about, but this is pretty bad news... Just announced on T.V that the death toll is up to 10.
