Seems that Jewish and Catholic groups are up in arms after getting some excerpts from the script. The Jews are pissed because they say the movie portrays them in a negative light. Mel wants to follow the gospels as closely as possible in this depiction and the gospels are pretty harsh on the Jewish community, as Mel put it, "He was not recognized and cast out by his own"
The Jewish groups are insisting that this will dredge up horrible stereotypes.
The Catholics are stating the same position, seems the Cathloic church has decided fuck the gospels let's hop on the PC bandwagon. Its like they are ashamed of how the gospels portray Jews but will latch on to these same scriptures to attack - Gays, Atheists, Muslims, and other undesirables. But since they have an alliance with the Jewish religious community let's start sweeping that embarassing shit under the rug.
Mel Gibson is not innocent either, while much of this is guilt by association it does make food for thought. Seems Mel's dad was a foudner of a movement that denied the neccessity of Vatican II and were sort of fundie Catholics. They also denied the Holocaust and other typically virulent antisemetic thought that pervaded the Church for centuries and which the church tried to deal with in Vatican II and which we see now in their defense of the Jewish view that the passion of Christ needs to be toned down a bit nowadays.
So does the son share the father's views...Mel denies it, but is known to be a strict Catholic, does not use birth control, hence the gaggle of kids he has, and now this movie, it makes you wonder.
Anyway, this had me thinking alot last night, particulalrly about the hypocrisy on all sides regarding the passion of Christ. Any thoughts?
