ArsTechnica thread

If this is real, Apple has just leapfrogged to the top of consumer computing.

Wait, I missed something. It says G4, right? Help me, I'm clueless.

It says G5 next to the main picture.

There are a few possibilities ...
Apple's server was hacked by some rumor mongerers who want their stock to plummet.
One of the web monkeys at Apple made a boo-boo and is now looking for another job.
Steve Jobs wanted to play with the Mac faithful.

But... I'm still lost... one little error and its newsworthy enough to be posted at almost the same time by two members with many capital letters and exclamation marks?

Durandal & I are the rezident Mac fanatics (even though I run Windows). Those specs surpass any PC at the moment - P4, Opteron or Athlon. Quite impressive.

It's not a "little" error. It's Lord Jobs ascending to his rightful place. :)

Well I guess someone at Apple got the case of the Uber-Munchies. That's worse than me with my Rabid-Fiver Technowank...

How so? Dual P4s and dual Athlon motherboards exist, last I saw. The rest is quite decent, but nothing worth dual topics.

The 970 is a floating-point monster of a processor, based on the POWER4. It's actually a 64-bit chip, but Apple may have locked it into 32-bit until the OS is ready. I don't know how it'll fair against an Opteron, but it's a safe bet that it'll destroy P4's and Athlons.

EDIT: That wouldn't make any sense. The machine can support 8 GB of memory by virtue of the chip's 64-bitness, so they've probably got the full 64 bits running there.

Um ... what does that have to do with anything?

By the way, I'm in the middle of arranging the sale of my eternal soul to Satan for one of those things. Negotiations are going smoothly.

I would not be surprised if Opteron and PPC970 are at parity.

Not neccessarily. They could have extended memory addressing but not pointer size.

You've never used OS X, have you? :)
At this point, I could easily make full use of 2 GB of memory.

It's good to have pride in being a Mac user again. :)

Neither would I, but the 970 is a monster floating point chip. The Opteron might lag slightly, though I can see the Opteron pulling ahead in integer ops. The Opteron also has an integrated memory controller, as well. The jury's still out on whether or not the G5 will have one, but the specs listed a 1 GHz "processor bus," which could hint at the memory controller being part of the CPU.
Not neccessarily. They could have extended memory addressing but not pointer size.
That's true, but why bother going through the effort of locking the chip into 32-bit mode and then extending the 32-bit pointer size so your chip can support as much memory as it naturally should be able to? The modifications to Jaguar to get it running on the 970 are essentially trivial, and while they'll keep the OS running in 32-bit mode, they don't entail locking the chip that way.

for Mac...oh that's right, there isn't any.

IL-2 Sturmovik: PC only
Steel Panthers WW2/MBT: PC only
Panzer Campaigns by HPS: PC only

Apple sucks balls. Always has, always will. For my purposes, that is, which is gaming.

Well yeah, it's a G4 system, but dual 2 GHz PowerPC chips? A gigahertz processor bus and up to 8 GB of RAM? Jesus fucking Christ on sunny Sunday afternoon that's some powerful juju. You'd expect those sort of specs on a dual processor server, not some Joe Schmuck's desktop.

Pound for pound those would be the fastest desktops on the market. Except they happen to be Macs, and you'll have to pay a whole lot for 'em.

Right
When I mean consumer computing, I'm referring to general design rather than hardware. (e.g. a personal computer versus an IBM minicomputer)
