Re: [Discussion] Testing page 3 lock

Post by Coyote »

I was in favor of the Page 3 lock for awhile, mostly out of a sort of inertia. But, yeah, having re-thought it, who cares? Let the fun run wild until it dies a natural death. We still have the eventual auto-delete set and the posts don't count towards postcount. It's harmless fun.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

I am curious if anyone even thought to get my opinion on the matter, or were content to simply cast me as some iron-fisted evil admin who went around locking threads just for shits and giggles.

Well technically neither of you in your current garb is an evil Admin, now your post phone booth Superman-like transformation into Admiral Kanos and The Wookie that makes you the evil admins who lock threads for shits and giggles. In this costume you are just the mild mannered SuperMods Darth Wong and Dalton. :D

Hey, as long as we're getting stuff done in record time today, can we abolish the Senate now?

Hey, for the Senate, it's blazing speed.

Not that actual Senate action had anything to do with either situation whatsoever, really.

So is this supposed to now be the part where the Senate comes in and comments on Mod/Admin action as a part of our new mandate? I'm confused.

Hey, the previous change was ALSO not discussed or even admitted to. This kind of backroom anonymous stuff is apparently what we're to expect.

But the Senate has a role... somewhere? I guess when Mike shows up and talks about disliking unilateral actions, this is what we get?

So, to summarize: to make decisions, everyone talks past one another for ten pages, then someone faceless changes the rules without notifying anyone? This is how it works?

Disliking unilateral *banning*. Which we now know we don't do - the Senate gets a say except in the most extreme cases. As for the everything else, well, some things arise from discussion, some things by act of Mike.

Even better, Bounty, is that when something is a fait accompli, all the traditionalist 'why change it' stuff kicks in. Transparency, right?

I think we were just talking about how the mod forum is where it really happens, but were told that was wrong. :)

I wonder how the after-action report will look on 'let's implement this rule without discussion and turn testing into 100% spam'. I guess we were supposed to agree it was already 100% spam?

Extreme cases like someone using a phrase that's on the "unacceptable shorthand" list.

Am I right?

Seriously though, this is a good example of why I've been saying that the Senate is essentially worthless.

I wouldn't yet rule out this whole thing being an elaborate troll. In fact, the more I think about it, the better the possibility seems to be.

This is how I took the original no-discussion anonymous removal of the lock policy. It's just massively ironic in the context of the 'what is the Senate for' and 'why do people hate the mods' atmosphere. :)

I think the lol of the Senate sitting here saying 'eh? What just happened? What is the intention' is far better than the giggling modstaff feeling big. I prefer to see it as a step in the 'Senate total irrelevance' program.

So it turns out people aren't really impressed with Moderators that use their power simply because they can?

I mean, honestly, I know that was used as an excuse as to "why oppress testing" but really, it's just old. I personally don't look at mod powers as an excuse to use them, in fact, I'd prefer not to whenever possible.

I get it, Testing is supposed to be for random bullshit for posters and possibly mods as well, but just deleting everything is LAZY. If you want to have fun, there are so many other, more subtle ways to go about it. Reassign posts to other users, rewrite posts without notification, mix and match threads, the tools you have are more than just "lol baleeted".

I thought mods were supposed to be clever.

Once again, almost a month now. The Senate gave up it's option to take action when it failed to bring anything to a vote and the issue in the eyes of the admin staff got worse. It would be different if there were a few plans that had been put to a vote and defeated. Or better still approved. Instead we have three pages spread out over a three week plus posting period and even then nothing has been voted on, or even seconded to be voted on.

The Senate can have a say when it says something.

What. The. Fuck. What issue was supposed to be voted on? The page three lock, after it got quietly dumped? The future douchebaggery of the mod staff? Am I going to get PM reminders for the Senate's weekly Haruspex session now?
and the issue in the eyes of the admin staff got worse
And what issue would that be? An overabundance of posts on Latin poetry?

That's actually kind of ironic since there were several long and pretty decent threads in testing, and now it's 100% spam because... why not? The change directly increased the spam levels in testing so good work.

Of course, the hilarious cloak-and-dagger of anonymously changing the rules and waiting for something to happen which did and then bringing the hammer down is fantastic.

Who decides how much discussion is too much? How is it 'not saying anything' when the discussions became moot when the rules were anonymously changed? How did the problem get worse when several threads of reasonable quality existed? It's very big of you to say this shit now all the evidence is gone instead of making a public decision. I guess this juvenile 'trap' was better?

Is anyone going to step forward and take responsibility, or do we just stick with the current 'Senate totally useless, mods do what they want without transparency'? Because if the standard is 'Bean thinks it's good enough', I want nothing more to do with this sham Senate.

Those threads should not have been in testing to begin with
It's very big of you to say this shit now all the evidence is gone instead of making a public decision.
There are some testing threads preserved in HoS or elsewhere

Very clear, just the Senate or the Forum?
