[Discussion] Good Vent, Bad Vent

I have been asked by a citizen to raise the following matter in the Senate. Here are his words. He has asked that his name be given with his words, for good or for ill.

This is the official presentation of the idea we discussed briefly in the chat. This idea specifically is the creation of a "Gloating" (name open for suggestions, but that's my best suggestion) thread in the Hall of Shame forum, in complement to the Venting threads.

Though most people use the Venting for both victories and irritations both, having the tone of the two be separate would perhaps help people celebrate their victories a little more. Understandably, when one succeeds at something, one's first impulse is not to rush excitedly onto the Internet and brag about it (well, then again...), but having this specific place for users to put items in their day to day lives that make it more bearable, give them a smile, or make them feel the flush of success.

Hotfoot also raised the concern that seeing the ratio of Venting to Gloating threads might be a bit depressing (e.g. "Venting 42, Gloating 4"), but the retort I raised is that sometimes, that's the way life works - one takes one's victories when one can.

I am unsure if this idea has been presented to the Senate in the past; I did look through most of the threads in the Senate and didn't find anything similar.

I say we table this motion for the next five years to prove to Howie that the Senate has calmed down, but proceed with all other business like we have been before this.

The single Venting thread serves the purpose quite admirably. Such threads are temporary and eventually deleted anyway, so I see no reason to provide separate threads for different types of vents, especially since it just means more work for the mods.

No. Really we have a venting thread for the sole purpose that it did alleviate pointless posts of "what happened to me today...".

IIRC, this has been discussed before, way back when, and was thoroughly shot down. Though the, err, benefits of a "bragging" thread could be seen, it is rather minimalistic to see the actual need for such. Besides, there are plenty of times that people use the current venting threads to post both good and bad vents in the same post (I know I personally have done so most times that I've posted in said threads).

As for my own opinion, yeah, it's not necessary. Vents are both good and bad, we can leave it at that.

Un-necessary. If we feel the name needs to be changed to something more neutral to reflect good-n-bad venting then that would deal with the issue just fine; however, it doesn't really seem to be an issue of substance.
