I don't think anyone is arguing that desert garb is stupid to wear in an actual desert. Were kachabias also commonly worn by Allied officers at SHAEF in WW2?

Officers and enlisted men wore them throughout the Italian Campaign, as well as the invasion of the south of France, like these Moroccan troops at Monte Cassino:

At Allied HQ? Who knows? I doubt many wore kachabias, though there are quite a few photos of Montgomery and others wearing duffel coats, which are mostly the same thing.
