Berman & Braga Discuss Trek Continuity
The Spin-o-rama continues
"We did always feel we were utilizing continuity from the original series," Braga said. "It wasn't until the fourth season when we - Rick, myself and Manny Coto - consciously decided to go deeper and stronger with that, but we never thought we weren't doing it.

"Of course, what would really happen is that in Game 7, with the Red Sox winning 20-0 in the 9th inning, with two outs and two strikes on the last Cubs batter, a previously unseen meteor would strike the earth, instantly and forever wiping out all life on the planet, and forever denying the Red Sox a World Series victory..."

For his part, Berman insisted that Trek canon is not always as clear-cut as some viewers might suggest. "There have been a lot of fans that have discussed the fact that Brannon and I have ignored the continuity of Star Trek and ignored canon," he said. "That could not be farther from the truth. We live and breathe this continuity and we're dealing with every element to try to keep a continuity going, but at the same time to create an entertaining series on a weekly basis year after year...we have to bend the rules a little bit."[/quote]

And here I thought DarkStar was delusional...
Mr Berman? You didn't bend the rules. You flat out ignored them, hacked them to pieces, and then set those pieces on fire so you'll excuse me if I continue to consider you a complete and utter moron.

Re: Berman & Braga Discuss Trek Continuity
[Berman] You still have much to learn about the darkside, my young apprentice[/Berman]Rick Berman felt that complaints about guest stars in the series finale of Star Trek: Enterprise were not warranted, but his co-writer Brannon Braga said that he understood why the show's actors might have been upset.
[Braga] Yes my master [/Braga]
I sure hope they provided examplesIn a new Dreamwatch interview posted at Sci Fi Pulse, the two executive producers said that they had worked all along to maintain continuity with previous Star Trek shows,
something they tried to do as well in "These Are the Voyages..." Berman admitted, "There were some grumblings about the fact that we brought Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis in from another series" to reprise their roles as Riker and Troi. "The feeling was that if this was going to be the finale of Enterprise, then why bring characters in from another series? But I think when people see the episode and realize what we were able to truly do - which is pay the respect to our characters the way we have - I think it's going to receive a very positive response
And how was "respect" payed?
And from what I understand many Trekkies responded negatively to the finalie
[Braga]The episode wasn't 'bad' the timing of it was[/Braga]Braga noted that those who have been critical of the episode were probably agitated already about it being the final installment of the series and that the unique concept might have been better appreciated under other circumstances.
The producers also felt that, while the fourth season of the series received a lot of attention for utilizing elements from the other Star Trek shows, it was an extension of what had been done all along. "We did always feel we were utilizing continuity from the original series," Braga said.
Where!? When!?
Having a cloakable Romulan ship isn't really "keeping continuity" since in TOS it was mentioned that cloaks never existed before "Balance of Terror"
Berman: Crap! it looks like this will be the last season"It wasn't until the fourth season when we - Rick, myself and Manny Coto - consciously decided to go deeper and stronger with that,
Braga: What are we going to do?
Coto: Hey I have an idea, why don't we listen to the fans.
Berman:
Braga:
Coto: The fans feel that we're not keeping continuity with TOS
Braga: What's this "TOS"?
Berman: What's this "Continuity"?
Coto:
Braga: Oh...that...
Berman: Fine then let's rip-off stuff from "TOS"
but we never thought we weren't doing it.
Riiiighht
Maintaining continuity would have improved the ratings a bit.Should we have gone stronger with the continuity elements earlier...who knows if that would have increased the ratings?"
What would have improved them definately would've been better writing
Ah..I seeFor his part, Berman insisted that Trek canon is not always as clear-cut as some viewers might suggest.
*Starts eyeing the TNG Tech Manual*
I would definately like to learn where they got this information, it seems that they may actually be listening"There have been a lot of fans that have discussed the fact that Brannon and I have ignored the continuity of Star Trek and ignored canon," he said.
[Berman/Braga] ...We are the all mighty, all that will be and shall be, WE ARE STAR TREK! [/Berman/Braga]"That could not be farther from the truth. We live and breathe this continuity
"bend the rules a little bit", Why?and we're dealing with every element to try to keep a continuity going, but at the same time to create an entertaining series on a weekly basis year after year...we have to bend the rules a little bit."
Surely you are creative and can create unique original ideas which don't require "bending of the rules"
[Berman/Braga] Well... Well... Welll back in the day...they didn't keep continuity so why should we? [/Berman/Braga]He added that some of Star Trek's own storylines contradict them
selves.
Hasn't it crossed their minds that given Trek's size and age a reorganization of the "rules" might be in order?

Talking with Chris O'Farrell I've realized a sad fact. Manny Coto was brought into Trek for the sole purpose of failing. B&B hired him and then shackled him with leg irons. When ENT still didn't do well B&B used Coto's failure as a statement that ENTs failure couldn't be placed on themselves. Furthermore with Coto supposedly being in charge, ENTs ultimately failure could not be pinned on B&B. Meaning they get off scott free and can still shit on Trek.

Now now, you can always bring it out and watch your enemies laugh themselves helpless. Then while they're rolling on the ground, you can stab them with a d'ktahg at your leisure.Uraniun235 wrote:*smirk* I think calling a bat'leth "fight usable" may be slightly inaccurate.Solauren wrote:I offer my collection of real-fight usable swords, including a full-sized Battle'eh and reinforced Claymore.

It's the corporate mentality, which in our era has become pinned to the ethos that whoever dies with the most toys wins and the hell with everybody else.Stark wrote:Y'know, that makes sense, in an 80s office politics kinda way. Well Lucas does have the advanatge of being the founder and head of a company that holds pretty much all the rights to his creation. (correct me if I'm wrong but Fox only has the rights to distribute the films)Drunk Monkey wrote: GL definitely one that fight then didn’t he.

B&B are closer to what one would consider evil. They are "The Party" of 1984, they corrupt, twist, and shape history to fit their own needs, no matter how many people they have to alienate.

It makes perfect sense to me; I would not be suprised if they did just that. Face it, both of them are weasely little shits that have done less to work on the show than whore out the name Star Trek for whatever cash they could. If they weren't adept at office politics they would have been starving in a gutter somewhere long ago.Alyeska wrote:Talking with Chris O'Farrell I've realized a sad fact.
