Fundie attacks Harry Potter

Post by Oddity »

Shame on you J. K. Rowling for promoting what the Bible condemns! These books awaken the reader’s curiosity about witchcraft, and occult powers and practices. Joanne K. Rowling finds herself in the place of Simon the Sorcerer of Acts 8:9. She is using sorcery and bewitching the children!

Nine Biblical Principles For Determining Acceptability

1. Are belief systems and/or doctrines evident or advocated that are contrary to the Bible?
2. Are values & philosophies espoused that are unbiblical?
3. Is Supernatural power evident that has a source other than the God of the Bible?
4. Are there occult, witchcraft, psychic, satanic, or New Age, vampire-Goth symbols, names, or practices incorporated?
5. Are the imaginations and thoughts of the participant steered in an unwholesome direction, unbiblical direction?
6. Is immorality, sensuality or immodesty depicted, or does it arouse lust?
7. Does it incite fear or glorify evil or violence?
8. Is the language used questionable?
9. Will it promote questionable character traits?
Well, that's the complete works of Shakespeare off the curriculum at last.

they've been attacking harry potter ever since it came out. if they were consistent in their ban lists, they would stuff themselves in an iron box and never come out, for fear of being corrupted by the dark side.

Nine Biblical Principles For Determining Acceptability

1. Are belief systems and/or doctrines evident or advocated that are contrary to the Bible?

The Bible has contradictory accounts of the same event. That means that they go against the doctrine of the Bible
2. Are values & philosophies espoused that are unbiblical?
The Bible has contradictory accounts of the same events that are supposed to be key to that philosophy. That means they go against the Bible and so espouse something unbiblical.
3. Is Supernatural power evident that has a source other than the God of the Bible?
Yes, Satan has some kickass powers and Christians say that it isn't God's will.
4. Are there occult, witchcraft, psychic, satanic, or New Age, vampire-Goth symbols, names, or practices incorporated?
Yes, there are references to the occult and witches, Satan, etc. in the Bible.
5. Are the imaginations and thoughts of the participant steered in an unwholesome direction, unbiblical direction?
Yes. Genocide isn't a wholesome thing yet the Bible justifies it. Same thing with rape.
6. Is immorality, sensuality or immodesty depicted, or does it arouse lust?
The Bible has a guy willing to let his virgin daughters get passed around in a gang bang. That is pretty lusty.
7. Does it incite fear or glorify evil or violence?
Hell yes. The Bible has genocide multiple times and mass murder and it is all justified and in fact encouraged when used against the unfaithful.
8. Is the language used questionable?
Yes. It is all contradictory and many people cannot agree what it really says. It is highly questioned and questionable.
9. Will it promote questionable character traits?
Yes, mass murder and genocide, rape, etc. are not good character traits. They are highly questionable.

Damn, according to those nine principles, you can't even read the Bible.

Those fundamentalists will go after anything. Harry Potter is particularly dangerous to them because it is popular among their children. I'm just surprised they haven't accused the author of witchcraft, yet. Maybe they should just burn her at the stake.

They have accused her of casting spells and beguiling children. A formal accusation can't be too far in coming.

Good GOD! What is this world coming to? Should I simply point out that the legend of King Arthur uses magic, and then ask them if they should destroy that text?

Just because someone is interested and knowledgeable of something does not mean that they subscribe to it. There are many people who are interested in WWII, but that does not make them Nazis. Apparently our fundamentalist friends have missed the subtle distinction, there.

Read my post above about the nine principles. According to those Christians can't read the Bible. :D

In the book, The Prisoner of Azkaban "good witch" Harry Potter casts a spell on his Aunt Marge to get revenge, when his frustration and anger reach the boiling point because she called his mother a "bitch" and proclaims that his parents got killed in an auto accident as the result of driving drunk. The revenge spell is bad enough, not to mention the language.
Ummm... This is a different edition to my copy of Prisoner. Can someone please tell me where I can get the dirty language version?

They also conveniently forgot to mention that the spell was involuntary...

And, of course, they butchered the context. The fundie is clearly advocating child-abuse, in the book, because that is what they had been doing to Harry.

Yes, that parts in my Copy IB, Swear words and all, course mine was a gift set sent from my Aunt(Who helped bring over HP to the US of A so you can imagin how well she did off that)

And yes those nine princples, its so funny the Bible Fails nearly all of them

Infact the only book I could think of off the top of my head that does not promet all the things they list would be "See Spot Run" or prehaps some of the old "Curious George" series

Found it!

It's not bad language, it's an analogy. She's using the word 'bitch' to mean a female dog, so it doesn't count.

well, obviously page references are useless, 'coz we've got different editions (on account of being on different sides of the Atlantic). It's at the bottom of page 24, actually :-)

I believe the exacy quote is "If they're something wrong with the bitch, there's something wrong with the pup".

Fundies are only doing this so they can get attention. That's all they care about, even if it's negative attention.

Interesting fact: more books have been burned in the USA then any other country in the world.

This is exactly the sort of naked ploy for attention I've come to expect from the Pentehostiles. Find something that's currently popular in the mainstream and denounce it as the "work of Satan." With all the roleplaying, book-writing, movie-producing, and computer game releasing that Satan is apparently responsible for, it's a miracle he has any time left for swindling people out of their souls. I remember when it was Star Wars, and when it was Dungeons and Dragons, or when it was Vampire: the Masquerade. Next year something else will be part of the insidious Satanic attack on the nonexistant Judeo-Christian foundations of America. It's become so laughable to me that I barely notice the latest antics of the Religious Reich. I hope for the day when this sort of news is greeted with the collective yawn it deserves.

guess I'm going to hell for that....

I wanna see what's next.

Seriously I mean I have yet to hear parents blame Potter books for murder, but I know it'll happen given we have MMORPGs being blamed for suicide.
