That was a different article, focusing mainly on the investigations with the Star Trek thing as a throwaway line. This appears to be more focused on explaining the connection.

This is the second time I've seen a thread about Trekkies being linked to child pornography, and I'm fucking sick of it. :banghead: :finger:

We always say there are two types of pedophiles: Star Trek and Star Wars,"
"But it's mostly Star Trek."

:wtf:
t was the common stereotype of the molester and collector -- an older white male, living alone or with his aged parents, often in squalid conditions. "A loser in a basement wearing track pants,"
So these people are middle aged white Trekkies, who are "losers".

I'll be looking at certain sites diffrently from now on.

Maybe it's because of the fantasy world connection?

What bugs me is that it's more likely just a statistical result rather than the implied "Trekkies are more likely to be pedophiles". Science fiction is such a ridiculasly popular trend, yet somehow Star Trek(one of the obviously more popular ones) has been singled out specifically and linked to child pornography. It rubs me the wrong way, being a Trekkie myself. *grumbles*

Robert, noone is saying ST leads to molesting children, merely that the disturbed, predatory nutbars that fuck little kids are attracted to ST. Get it straight, man. To be fucking honest, *I'VE* noticed a motherfucking statistical correlation - utter social misfits LOVE ST.

Meh...I guess that's true. Perhaps it was too much of a knee jerk reaction on my part...

That was what I observed at the one convention I attended.

Of the people I've known long enough to get an idea of their personality/habits etc, the proportion of complete lamers who love startrek is enourmous, like over 90%. As soon as you move outside the 'social retard' population, ST fans become far, far less common.

It's wierd: the worst debaters, and the Angriest Young Virgins, and the most stay-at-home people are ALL STAR TREK FANS.

It's like Fry on Futurama said "when I had no friends, Star Trek made me feel like I had some." Or words to that effect.

But now that you mention the social retard angle, a buddy of mine fits that description to a tee and he is a complete trekkie. Even likes Enterprise, though I think he watches it for T'Pol.

There’s nothing wrong with watching a crappie TV show for an insanely hot bitch. 8)

I have to disagree, Enterprise was so bad not even T'Pol would entice me to watch. Besides I like my shows to have some reedeming features besides boobs. If I want tits I'll watch porn.

The question "why does Star Trek appeal to social misfits" could probably merit its own thread. Nevertheless, one would have to bury his head quite deep in the sand in order to pretend that there is no correlation between social ineptitude and Star Trek fandom.

To a lesser extent you could say that about the fans of any sci-fi series, but Star Trek stands head and shoulders above (or perhaps below, depending on how you look at it) the rest when it comes to this particular issue.

I think it's because it creates a realistic fantasy that people with no social skills can buy into. When you look at STverse, none of the characters have much in the way of people skills, which gives people with none in real life hope and an outlet for their lack of skill. They can submerge themselves in a universe where if you have only brains you can succeed at anything.

Well there's also the whole "perfect society" thing, where they probably assume that their perversions would go overlooked and unpunished.

The thing is there is plenty of evidence that in the Federation they "reeducate" their weirdos. Maybe they hope that they would be caught and cured?

Either they're unaware of or just ignore that aspect. I think it's escapism in hopes of avoiding punishment. More than likely they could be convinced that things like pedophilia would be overlooked.

Duh. It's escapism. It's what you turn to when you're fed up with the real world. Some use it to unwind - others take it a bit too seriously.
However, I don't see how Star Trek would have a bigger appeal for misfits then other sci-fi or fantasy.
To a lesser extent you could say that about the fans of any sci-fi series, but Star Trek stands head and shoulders above (or perhaps below, depending on how you look at it) the rest when it comes to this particular issue.
Perhaps because it's one of the oldest franchises, or because it has had a very active fan community for nearly forty years. I don't think it's because there's anything particular about Trek that draws in the misftis - it's the idea that you become, at some level, part of a community.

Again, I don't see why you're singling out Trek.
When you look at STverse, none of the characters have much in the way of people skills, which gives people with none in real life hope and an outlet for their lack of skill.
How do Trek characters "lack people skills" ?

While it might be amusing to some to draw a correlation here as in, "oh look, trekkies are sicko or have something wrong with them mentally or are child molesters, etc. etc," we would really do well to remember that correlation is not causation.

There are some sick motherfuckers out there, I think we all know that. But I feel safe stating that the vast majority of warsies/trekkies do not fit into that category.

Yes, there is something wrong with people that run around exploiting children for profit, pleasure, etc. But that "something wrong" is their brain, not star trek or any other ficticious universe created by anybody else.

Maybe lacking people skills is the wrong description. Most characters in Trek are wooden one demensional characters with no depth. And when you have characters like Worf who have no people skills and react to everything with one action (violence) it gives people the wrong idea. Haven't you noticed that each Trek character has one way or reacting to a situation?

Picard talks it to death
Worf kills it
Riker fucks it
O'Brien fixes it
Troi pyscho anylizes it to death
etc.

Now you or I watch this and say no big deal. But to people that immerse themselves into Trek totally, they may see it as a valid way to respond to life.
