Star Trek map

Post by Lord Zentei »

Can anyone tell me where I can obtain a good map of the Federation and/or the ST galaxy? Thanks.

I believe Star Trek Dimension has a good galactic and Federation map. It's something like www . stdimension . org.

DITL has a few under Politics -> Maps, but they're all speculation.

The maps of STdimension are here :

++http://www.stdimension.org/int/Cartography/Maps.htm

-> real and official maps

++http://www.stdimension.org/int/Cartography/Atlas.htm

-> "galactic atlas"

The stdimension map looks good, although it shows the Federation as spread across ca. 400 light years of space as opposed to the 8000 ly stated in First Contact. :? (I realize it might be a cross section across the long axis rather than along it, but that would give the Federation a long 1:20 sausage shape.)

Also this site is guilty of the oft repeated mistake of representing the Galaxy as being exactly 100000 ly across (as opposed to the 1e5 ly figure being merely an order-of-magnitude estimate and the correct figure being in the vicinity of 40-50 kpc, or 130-160 thousand ly...)

Trek cartography has hardly been consistent over the years, so I guess they needed to compromise. The site has a table of the distances used in making the map here

Yes, pity GR+crew didn't devise at least a crude map early on.

I second the recommendation for Star Charts.

I just wish Pocket Books would stop all this novel crap and produce/reprint more reference stuff that's actually interesting.

I was actually thinking of this as a source for a sort of strategy game thingy. Would the Star Charts be useful in that capacity?

I suppose it would.

Walper, just shut the fuck up with your "lil ol' me" bullshit. You're not as amusing as you think you are.

Oh yeah. I second that that. 8)
I like the map in that it actually shows how a huge interstellar empire would realistically be likely to expand: up and down its spiral arm. It's refreshing when a Trekkie takes into acount what the actual physical geography of the galaxy is instead of their stupid asinine quadrants system.
Interesting take on ST:V, they support the idea of warp express lanes that let you get around parts of the galaxy much faster than normal.

That brings up an interesting idea. Perhaps the Enterprise actually used a Borg transwarp conduit, but had no idea what it really was or who built it (perhaps not even knowing it's artificial nature either).

Or they never went to the centre of the galaxy at all, since that ain't what it fucking looks like. If David Coresh said 'we'll drive our VW to the centre of the universe... here we are' would you believe him? Christ.

Actually if you look at some of the maps they contradict DS9. Lot of the maps show Bajor on opposite side of the feds as romulan and Kligon. Yet in DS9 the dominion was cutting across romulan space to strike at the feds.

They could have been taking the long haul around to attack where the Federation would be weaker having had to draw forces away from the Neutral Zone to send to the front lines with the Dominion. Its doable when you have ships that can refuel by stopping off at the nearest nebula though supply lines for spare parts, torpedoes, ketracel white ect. would be a major pain and probably limit the severity of the attacks. But big or small raids, they would serve their purpose well by drawing off ships from the front to protect the Federation's flank.
