Characters You Hated in ST

Post by Tommy J »

They're running a thread in other sci-fi about characters you hate. Thought it might be interesting to do the same with ST and why.

Here goes mine

TOS:

Chekov -- hated the fake Russian accent and the boyish attitude.

Next Gen:

Wesley Crusher -- irritated the shit out of me for too many reasons to mention.

Deanna Troi -- her endless psycho babble. [I guess as a gay man I couldn't appreciate the low cut uniforms to ogle over]

DS9:

Kira -- it wasn't necessarily the character but how it was acted in as much as her anger.

Gul Dacot -- his endless speeches would drive me crazy. When I had the FF on the remote I'd skip over him.

Dr. Bashir -- hated the character and hate Siddig as an actor. He plays himself I believe as both, arrogant.

Voyager:

Harry Kim -- his child like attitude about everything.

Chaktoy -- not necessarily the character itself. But the actor played the part with disdain for the franchise which was evident.

Neelix -- enough said on that one as it's self evident as to why.

Enterprise:

Virtually everyone for all the reasons discussed over and over on SD.net.

Only character I like on Enterprise is Travis played by Anthony Montgomery. Reason I like him is because I think he's handsome. :)

Picard: "Mister Crusher, go space yourself, okay?"
Wesley: "Yes, sir!"

That's a dialogue I waited for so long, yet never saw it. Sigh.
"Death before dishonour" they say, but how much dishonour are we talking about exactly? I mean, I can handle a lot. I could fellate a smurf if the alternative was death.

Wesley was incessantly annoying.

Troi was the ship slut.

Janeway was a frickin' idiot.

Tom Paris was brainless.

7of9 was a gimmick.

Belanna Torres was the same cliche all over again.

Archer was an imbecile.

T'Pol was a confused adolescent with delusions of grandeur.

Chekov was cool! :P

Anyway:

TNG - Wesley Crusher annoyed me...as did Deanna Troi. She slept with everything that moved, including:
A) Worf
B) Riker
C) An alien glow-ball that got her pregnant

Even my MOTHER thinks Deanna Troi is a slut  That tells you something, since she's only seen maybe 5-10 episodes.

And her mother was even more annoying!

DS9- All of the Ferengi outside of Quark, Rom, and Nog (Rom and Quark provided comedic relief, but all the other Ferengi were the most annoying things in history- I HATED the Ferengi episodes). And all the Vorta.

Voyager- Harry Kim was mildly annoying. Tuvok was very annoying. Neelix- duh.

And 7 of 9 REALLY annoyed me. Her entire purpose on the show was to walk around with the tightest clothing possible and make men gawk at her, while she droned on about why she was different for being a Borg.

Enterprise- The whole series.

TOS
No one comes to mind. The main cast is the only one of all five Trek series that I have no problems with whatsoever.

TNG
Wesley Crusher, hands down.

DS9
Of the main cast, Jake; I was never too crazy about him, though he's been handled well in the relaunch due to the position he was left in at the end of the series.

VGR
Seven of Nine -- As Ted C said, Gimmick.

ENT
Archer, hands down. I despise the character and I can't believe how this jackass is meant to be Kirk's childhood hero.

Really, you hated 7 of 9. I always understood upfront it was an obvious gimmick on behalf of the producers to appeal to the 18-25 year olds, to me she was the comic relief trying to play the straight ass borg in the SIREN cat suit outfit. And there was more than one interchange between the Dr. that probably was never meant to be funny but ended up to me as comic relief.

TOS
Uhura ("It wasn't the sun! It was the son of God!")

TNG
William Riker (moron)
Deanna Troi (<holds nose> "Captain, I'm sensing... great joy! And happiness!")
Lwaxana Troi
Beverly Crusher
Wesley Crusher ("Gee whiz! Look at my portable tractor beam!")

DS9
Ezri Dax
Kai Winn (we were supposed to hate her, of course)
The Prophets
Gul Dukat (only in later seasons when he went nuts)
All Ferengi except Quark and Nog
Vic Fontaine (the last mirror universe episode was worth it just to see him die)

VOY
JANEWAY JANEWAY JANEWAY JANEWAY
Kes
Neelix
Chakotay ("Chakotay's regaining consciousness." "How can you tell the difference?")
Tom Paris
Harry Kim
Belanna Torres

ENT
Everyone. Phlox and T'Pol seemed sane in very early episodes, but that sure changed in a hurry.

Archer alternated between being a spineless wimp and a total stupid jackass. He was wussy and indecisive most of the time, except when he would decide to "make a stand" on some stupid and wrong position, such as refusing to ask the Vulcans for help saving his endangered crewmen, or refusing to apologize to some aliens for letting his dog piss on their sacred tree.

That's funny Slarti. Actually I thought the actor who played Barclay was actually pretty good and if you've seen him on other TV programming he's nothing like the character. I always thought that the writers wrote a character in like him to add some comic relief as well demonstrate that everyone in the Federation wasn't as 'well-adjusted/perfect' as suggested by Picard et al.

Sometimes his character got annyoing, but I thought in general it was just the writers having some good fun with flawed in a funny way persona.

TOS:

Can't think of anyone, really. Even Chekov wasn't bad.

TNG:

WESLEY CRUSHER. Glad his presence was minimalized over time.

DS9:

Nog and Rom, though the former improved towards the latter seasons.

VOY:

Everyone, especially Neelix.

ENT:

Phlox is probably the most annoying, though the entire cast is pretty ineffectual. I don't really think it's due to the actors/actresses, however.

Don't think anyone's mentioned the movies yet:

ST II
Carol Marcus
David Marcus

ST IV
The lady from 7th Heaven

ST G
Data (with emotion chip)

ST FC
The Borg Queen
Alfre Woodard's character

TOS

Uhura - more because her scripting sucked...the character was OK, acting was decent...scripts sucked
Kirk - I...have never...liked Shatner...as...an actor. His...delivery is...stilted

TNG

Picard - everything is peace, love, and lollipops. When did the hippies take over?
Troi - skank. Covered enough previously
Wesley Crusher - boy genius with a weasel-like manner. Spacing is too kind
Riker - I've met smarter rocks
Worf - even Riker's smarter

DS9

Never watched, seemed too much like a soap opera in space rather than true Star Trek

VOY

Janeway - even Worf's smarter 8)
Chakotay - a little stoicism is a good thing, but dude, you're a fuckin' corpse
The Doctor - just annoyed me for some reason. I like the actor, but hate the character
7 of 9 - I don't mind eye candy with a purpose. Pointless eye candy irritates me. I liked Kes

ENT

Avoided like the plague after the tragicomedy that was Voyager.

Not just that, but her very existence threw the continuity of contact between the Borg and Feds as established on TNG out the window and as a stickler for continuity, this annoyed the hell out of me.

TOS:

No complaints.

TNG:

Deanna Troi - after looking like a waitress at an interstellar diner in the series pilot, spent too many episodes looking pained whenever she sensed hostile emotions.

Engineer of the Week - After having a character like Scotty in TOS, the absence of an Engineer was a major failing.

*** WESLEY CRUSHER *** - Too smart for his own good. Undisciplined. Never got more than a stern talking to for the problems he caused. Somehow inexplicably knew more from independent reading than officers who had studied and served for years.

Dr. Katherine Pulaski - Waste of an excellent actress. You know it's a bad sign when the character starts her tenure by mispronouncing 'Data' for the sake of some long-winded, never-quite-getting-to-the-point rant on how human knowledge is superior to technology. Entire premise flushed down the toilet and replaced with touch screens.

DS9:

Nog - Yes, let's reform a profit-minded Ferengi and turn him into a model Starfleet officer. Social commentary at its worst.

VOYAGER:

Janeway - She of the three-pack-a-day voice. Writers saw fit to have her comment about how someone like Captain Kirk wouldn't make it in 'today's Starfleet.'

B'Lanna Torres - Overwrought angst of conflicted 'Klingon' and 'Human' sides. Klingon side wants to wade through the corridors knee-deep in blood, Human side wants to have tea and scones. Even worse was the bad rehash of 'The Enemy Within' where B'Lanna's genetic contributors are split by magictech (conveniently doubling her body mass) and somehow winding up with the human half being weak and mewling, discarding all of human history for the sake of making a half-assed point.

Harry-not-Harry Kim - Thanks for making the Asian character a sap, sucker, and general waste of space. He's Tom Paris' sidekick, often falling for the punch lines of jokes. He gets blown out into space and replaced by his near-identical twin from an alternate universe.

EMH - Waste of a good actor. Addition of magictech holoemitter negated a plot point, rather than developed the character.

*** 36-24-36 (AKA Seven-of-Nine) *** - Brought in under the justification of an exciting character with lots of potential. Somehow, Kes was a bad idea, and everyone realized that right from the start, but they were all first to say so, and no one ever made a mistake. Someone at Trek HQ must like women with stringent strip-the-paint-off-walls voices: Janeway, Torres, Seven. (Yes, Jennifer Lien's voice is far sexier than Jeri Ryan in a catsuit.) Oh, and Ryan is Brannon Braga's girlfriend now.

ENTERPRI$E:

Didn't bother with this train wreck past the pilot. Good cast, lousy writing.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion
Through passion, I gain strength
Through strength, I gain power
Through power, I gain victory
Through victory, my chains are broken

Theoretically she could be explained by saying the Hansens didn't actually start out looking for the Borg specifically, they were just looking for that mysterious species that destroyed the Neutral Zone outposts. That way continuity would be preserved (so long as they didn't radio home their findings much).
As for Seven being eye candy, something that seems to never occur to all the guys who want to bang her is that she still has active Borg nanoprobes in her bloodstream, and as we all know Borg nanoprobes are passed by bodily fluid contact-just like HIV. :P

As for the annoying characters question.
Deanna Troi. God do I hate that woman. Followed by Wesley Crusher and any and all Ferengi except Quark & company (man those trolls are annoying). Also the Kazon; they had to be the campiest villains ever. The Borg Queen royally pissed me off simply by existing. Oh yeah, throw anyone and anything from ENT into the midden heap as well, that show blows harder than a horny lesbian prostitute. And of course, one cannot neglect to mention the great Janeway.

Barclay. Seriously.

Past that, I hated Troi, Troi's mom, Worf, Wesley, everyone on Voyager, everyone on Enterprise, everyone on DS9, and I have a love/hate thing going with, of all characters, Kirk. Usually love.

TOS: Janice Rand...glorified coffee girl.

TNG: Troi and Wesley always pissed me off. Geordi and Beverly always seemed to be kinda bland.

DS9: Jake, Ezri Dax, Gen. Martok ("BWA! Bloodwine!") Gowron (they really fucked him up on DS9)

VOY: I hated everyone except the Doctor.

ENT: Whenever I see Travis I think "Peddle to the metal!" - Galaxy Quest

Seriously, I haven't watched Enterprise enough to care.

Same thing happens to Chief O'Brien actually. He goes 6 hours into the future and dies but his future self goes back in time and replaces them.

How the heck does that work?
