IIRC was from the end Augments arc when Soong is attacked by one and Archer shoots the Augment with MACO plasma rifle.

It is not the first time this has happened; there is an episode where Dr. Crusher is on a shuttle and a previously thought dead scientist attacks her. She fires on him and phasorizes a largish hole in his midsection before increasing the power and finishing him off. It was actually quite gory, fluids dripped down from the top of the hole.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Personally, I don't think something like that really belongs in Star Trek...

MACO's use plasma pistols, stun grenades, and plasma rifles.
I thought that the obvious reason why Malcom's security would use phase pistols rather than plasma pistols would be a stun setting. However, there is at least an allusion to plasma pistols/rifles having some sort of stun setting from the mutiny episode where MACO's shoot and take control of the bridge. Does anybody recall a plasma pistol/rifle definitely having a stun setting?

They do have stun setting as Archer ordered all weapons to use stun during Season 3.brianeyci wrote:MACO's use plasma pistols, stun grenades, and plasma rifles.

Yes, in the episode from season three where archer boards the insane vulcan ship, they were firing the maco rifles on the vulcans and the maco said something along the lines of "Stun isn't working sir! we need to set them to kill!" and archer or someone says "Leave them on stun! they are still vulcans officers...."brianeyci wrote:MACO's use plasma pistols, stun grenades, and plasma rifles.

Why... Because it's too gruesome? Or because it doesn't fit with the "non-violent" character of the heroes of Starfleet?Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Still, I don't think something like that really belongs in Star Trek. The Silence and I wrote:It is not the first time this has happened; there is an episode where Dr. Crusher is on a shuttle and a previously thought dead scientist attacks her. There's a TNG episode where they cause a guys head to explode. I don't see why it doesn't belong in Star Trek. I think it's an important part of Star Trek and they need more!Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Still, I don't think something like that really belongs in Star Trek. The Silence and I wrote:It is not the first time this has happened; there is an episode where Dr. Crusher is on a shuttle and a previously thought dead scientist attacks her. Aye, Conspiracy if you and I are think of the same one. That was a cool partial phasorization! Actually, if you watch several of the early TNG phasorizations they are rather graphic frame by frame; complete with skeletons and layered dissapearing!

If I had my way, Trek writers would be barred from ever using the words "quantum", "plasma", and "subspace". God, they're such lame crutches.

One step at a time. Ban them from using "particle of the week" and then work our way up to banning "quantum."

I haven't watched Enterprise since the end of the second season, so I haven't ever seen the MACOs at all. Maybe I'm remembering this wrong, but weren't human "plasma cannon" weapons seen in the first few episodes, and weren't they presented as primitive weapons with poor accuracy and firepower?
I seem to remember the farmer from the premiere shooting the fugitive Klingon with a "plasma rifle", and the Enterprise mounting ship-to-ship "plasma weapons" before they got the phasers.
Have the writers changed their mind and decided that these weapons are now 'uber' weapons, or are they still presented as ineffective compared to phasers? Or was I just wrong about the name?

Phasers? Everyone knows Phaser haven't been invented yet!Spacebeard wrote: I seem to remember the farmer from the premiere shooting the fugitive Klingon with a "plasma rifle", and the Enterprise mounting ship-to-ship "plasma weapons" before they got the phasers.

Actually... plasma weapons were whatever was supposed to be the predessors to phasers. This was in the pilot, so it couldn't have been an attempt to "reclaim" viewers.Stark wrote:LOL plasma gunnns OMFG!!!!111 lamezor!
'Desperate to reclaim viewers' doesn't even start to describe it.
What was stupid that they made no effort to differentiate between the MACO weapons and the ship's security weapons. The obvious thing would have been to make MACO weapons have no stun setting, and phase pistols have a stun setting. They trashed that though. So we don't know what's good about MACO weapons -- except that they are scaled up phasers in rifle form. Bah.
Same with ship plasma weapons. What could have been done is to show an obvious difference... "Captain, the plasma weapons are useless against their shields." Even better would be if we had seen why the switch from projectile weapons to energy weapons. We don't even get to see that on a personal or ship basis. Like I mentioned, the whole pioneer spirit is lost and undeveloped. The potential for the humans to be "roughing it" in a galaxy full of bad guys was not explored.
Did we ever see a phase rifle?

Yeah, the Enterprise had a "plasma pulse cannon" prior to getting the experimental "phase cannon," IIRC. Didn't it also have "spatial torpedoes," or some crap like that? And there are plasma sidearms and rifles in Enterprise, which are supposed to end up being replaced by phase weapons...not phasers, phase weaponsSpacebeard wrote:I haven't watched Enterprise since the end of the second season, so I haven't ever seen the MACOs at all.
