are there any available maps of Earth during, say... the TNG or DS9 time frame. I'm curious as to how many major cities are still standing, where they are, etc.

Los Angeles sank underwater in THE BIG ONE, and many east coast cities were wiped out in WWIII.

What maps reflect this are unknown.

ok, let me cut to the chase. How many troops would it take to soundly take/occupy Earth?

I think that would all depend on what race was doing the invading. Some are better than others.

I doubt you could even get transports close to Earth to invade. Hell, I'd be surprised if you could even get to the outter edge of Sol without having a couple dozen Feddie ships cornholing you.

The Borg and the Breen seemed to manage it, I'm sure any competent enemy wouldn't have a problem infiltrating the dire defences of the Sol system, especially if they were mounting an invasion of the Federation homeworld.

The Breen has cloaks and just seconds after dropping the cloaks the entire fleet was destroyed. If you saw the last episode of Voy you'll see that not even the Borg can enter setor 001 without meeting a fleet.

I'm sure he means how many troops are needed for an invasion, assuming space superiority is established. Let's face it, invading a planet without clearing away the orbital defenders first is tad moronic.

And to answer the question: a couple thousand. Hey, Sela thought it could work... ;)

In reality, millions. And even then, it's probably doubtful you will ever completely pacify the entire planet.

Paris & San Fransisco are still around. Antwerp has been mentioned as well, though wasn't seen on screen. Same goes for a number of other cities.

And number of troops needed? Not -that- many, since Earth doesn't have a standing army on the ground under most circumstances.

It depends on what you want to do. You could bomb the place from orbit, flatten cities with torpedoes set to detonate via airburst. Of course, if you're squemish about atrocities, then you gotta do it the old fashioned way... even if there is no standing army, there will be some kind of resistance movement. Bajor, a planet and race of pacifist fundies, formed a resistance to the Cardassians over the 60 year long occupation. Earth, which has been neutered for less time than the Bajorans were, would probably form a resistance a lot sooner, with a lot more competence and historical knowledge, and conduct lovely assymetrical warfare against the invaders. Furthermore, Earth's population is in the billions... so if you WANT to invade a planet with a population that big, and you don't want to wipe entire cities off the face of it, then you gotta throw down heaps of troops. And in the scale of a multi-star empire, which is presumably the antagonists in this hypothetical, a couple million troopers shouldn't be much more than a drop in the bucket.

IMHO.

The Borg use massive cubes, which just seem to steam roll through ships. Not to mention that they're a bit faster at warp. The Breen, as stated before, were destroyed almost as soon as they decloaked. They were only able to fire on SF HQ and the academy.

Don't forget Paris is still standing. I have no idea WHY...I would have thought SOMEONE would have nuked the French in WW3....

They really love the Louvre?

Who knows why they made it the capital.

Gotta admit, I really didn't like Paris on my first visit, and it's still by no means my favorite city in Europe (not if I can visit Amsterdam or Florence instead), but it grows on ya ..... great food, gorgeous women.

It may have been nuked and then rebuilt to some degree.

the Eiffel Tower is still standing. That likely wouldn't have been the case if the city was nuked.

It shouldn't be beyond the Earth of the future's ability to rebuild the Eiffel tower.

Possible, but there is little to no evidence to suggest that. It's entirely possible, (and even likely considering some of the Paris and San Fransisco landmarks still standing in the 24th century) that not all cities were nuked.
