Something i was wondering, Why does everyone seem to hate the Galaxy-Class ship. The Galaxy class was one of the best designs( no warp core breach withstanding ) I also think the Excelsior, the Ambassador, the Miranda, the Oberth, the Nova and the Constitution( and constitution refit) are good and sturdy designs.

People just didn't feel comfortable with its lines. I've also heard bitching about its warp pylons, though strangely these people don't say a word about the equaly bad Constitution pylons (and the movie connie is almost universaly loved). Personaly I think its a fairly good looking ship and DS9 started giving it some credit when it was kicking ass and taking names. I have a feeling some people are more jadded by its poor showing in the TNG series and translate that onto the ship. Another comment I've heard is how massive the saucer seems in comparison to the rest of the ship, And that is rather striking.

All in all it comes down to personal preference. Some like it, some don't.

It's pretty, but it's very badly engineered. HORRIBLY engineered, I should say.
Plus the fact that it's seriously under-armed for its class.
The Galaxy War Refit is a much nicer design though.

The Connie Refit is just about as bad engineering wise, yet many more people like that design.

And the War Galaxy is actualy not more heavily armed then the Galaxy. Only one particular model of the War GCS has just two additional phasers added. The War GCS is primarily a fix on the warp core and improves the Impulse drives. After that each War GCS is slightly different for the most part. Some War GCSs are still stock Galaxy's, just with the core fixed. Some have improved armor, some have added weapons, some have enlarged shuttlebays.

its poor showing in TNG was actually due to bad writing at times, like the "Cause and Effect" episode where a minor hit on the warp nacelles caused the explosion of the E-D. E-D was a good ship when the writing was good.

The Connie Refit is just about as bad engineering wise, yet many more people like that design.

the connie refit is actually a good design. Bad Engineering was the USS Voyager which had a Warp Core breach/Holodeck Malfunction every week.

Caused the explosion of the E-D...over, and over, and over, and over, and OVER again.

I have three basics complaints about the Galaxy.

1) Looks ridiculously topheavy. The saucer is huge, the engineering hull is not.

2) Seperation. I mean seriously, what the fnord?

3) It somehow manages to look more ridiculous when the oversized discus is taken off.

I'm sorry, the whole design is just horrible from an aesthtics for me. Then again, I prefer the sleek lines of a fantasy spacefarer, or the rugged industrial look of the SG Prometheus.

The headless duck, as the production called the seperated engineering section.

It doesn't look graceful at all. It's covered with windows. I don't like the TNG nacelles. It's like the designers were ordered not to put a single straight line into the ship.

I suppose a big part of it is I just don't like Federation ships in general. The mindless repetition of 'Saucer.. Hull.. Nacelles' became dull after the third kitbash I saw, and I hadn't even liked the idea in the first place. The gradual move towards TRIANGLES - hull - nacelles in more advanced ships was too little, too late. There is so little fundamental variety in Fed ships(Honestly, how much mileage have they gotten out of those basic model kits?).

I like it. At one time it was my favorite Trek ship. Though, I had a problem with the whole civilians on board thing. What was that about?

Honesty, the ship was ugly as hell. Since the beginning of the show, I thought the ship was fucking ugly. And I didn't mind the uniforms that much, mind you... and I actually thought the show was cool.

But the silly fluorescent nacelles, the silly fluorescent "dish" made it look even worse. I liked the more "rugged" look of the old constitution, and the new constitution looked even better.

I really can't stand the blue and purple neon shit in that Galaxy ship. And the whole curvaceous thing, instead of a more modular look.

I don't like the Galaxy-class because inside and out, it seriously does look like an interstellar Hilton.

I'm such an TOS purist, in that I only love the original Constitution-class...

Two things for me:

1. Every bad idea about engineering TNG writers had plus every bad idea about shipboard life and the nature of Starfleet Roddenberry had ended up in the Galaxy. Civilians, men in skirts, hair trigger warp core of doom, the lot of it.

2. She's butt ugly. Not quite as ugly as the Ambassador, but not for lack of trying.

I'd take a Defiant over a Galaxy any day.

The Excelsior was the peak of the whole saucer/body/nacelle thing as far as I'm concerned. Just a beautiful ship.

I don't mind the Galaxy's lines. She's actually a pretty ship from the outside. What goes on in the inside is what is disturbing.

No arguement there. Before the Defiant it was my absolute favorite ship. The Defiant makes it a tough choice- Excelsior is my favorite cruiser, Defiant my favorite quick-manuevering ship.

But the TNG Excelsior looks horrible (to me anyway). The ST6 one is the best.

Nah give me a Sovereign instead.

I don't know, the ship just seems to scream 'Waddling Cow' at me. Or possibly 'Beached Whale'.

Next to the compact, modular Nebula class, the Galaxy is all wasted space and unnecessary surface curves and flourishes. What engineer looked at the SF designs and said "Huh, no straight lines, solid structural supports or easily-manufacturable hull assemblages... that sounds about right"? The Galaxy is the most flimsy-looking ship in starfleet's arsenal (besides the Ent-J) and we know it was designed as a jack-of-all-trades compromise between exploration, warship and lavish diplomatic courier/Howard Johnson's. That kind of design schizophrenia always ends up in disaster.

Of all TNG ships the Nebula I liked the most.

The Galaxy have a feel of being more Cruiseship than Cruiser, a huge unwieldy brute with poor preformance in most serious situations. The ships in TOS and TOS-films had a feel of navyships about them while the Galaxy felt more like a hotel. Even visualy the Galaxy looks more comfortable orbiting a planet like a luxury diplomatic resort instead of racing along the warplanes to explore space of fight the enemies of the Federation.
The Nebula is better, Ambassador worse. Only the newer generations of SF ships match the older designs in looks.

I hate the GCS because it has crappy interiors, actually. On the outside it doesn't look like much, but on the inside it looks (in the words of Patrick Stewart): "like a shabby Hilton." The Bridge is just awful. Seriously, they seemed to purposely design it to look like a sofa lounge, where 90% of the time Picard just scowls at the giant TV screen at the front. The two forward stations looked like inclining chairs in the first season (ah, I can relax while I pilot this huge starship); what was missing was a footbath. I didn't like the holodeck, because they seemed to use it for the most stupid reasons imaginable (ah, minuet - I love you more than I could any real flesh and blood woman; hey baby, wanna sightsea? Check this place out...). And the crew cabins all looked the same, and each seemed to have windows.

Thankfully someone designed the Defiant's interiors competently. A crew mess, tight cabins, no holodecks - everything about it screams "Love me!"
