While watching the Suliban this occured to me, instead of ugly alien characters in skin tight catsuits why not have military uniform clad officers, soldiers in battlesuits with realistic looking guns ?

Well there was the planet with the Nazis, they were ok.
As for the non-military uniforms, I guess they don't fit Gene's view of a peaceful future.

Yup, probably do face makeup is cheaper than making battlesuits.

If you asked the producers that they'd probably point to the Klingons and say there you go.

Didn't they plan to give Jem'Hadar full metal body armor at first, but figured out the costumes would be too expensive?

Probally considering that Star Trek is a tv show, not a movie like Star Wars. Budget concerns are much more prevalent on the small screen than they are on the big screen. It would be cool to see The Shadow's idea though. The civ that has the miliartistic appearance would be a good foil for the Federation if they made the civ's actions militaristic and capitalist.

The Hirogen have pretty sweet looking body armor.

I guess it's also why in SG1, you see even more advanced races than Earth with wicked laser guns, but wearing only flashy shirts and stuff. At least give the Tokrah something more than imitation-leather.
Never mind the Aliens...

The Feddies need a makeover something fierce. All they need to do is take a trip through the Intergalactic Time Travel Donut...I mean the Guardian of Forever...and go back to Early 21st century earth to find those guys from Bravo's "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy."
I can see it now..."Oh, honey...Jumpsuits are so 22nd century!"
Then they can get the designers from "While You were out" and give the Enterprise a whole new look. They would shit can the entire A deck before Picard could say "Red Alert."

What they needed was something along the lines of the Trek TOS movie era uniforms. Those were smart, logical, looked good, uniforms for multiple jobs, took account for rank and enlisted/officer, etc...

Seconded. why the federation chose to do away with uniforms that actually looked somewhat respectable and decent and go to pajamas for uniforms i don't get. and unlike the uniforms in TNG, the uniforms in the ToS movies actually had pockets.

Yeah and if they needed a holster they could just weld it on. That would have been cool, but you can't have it all. Besides, the Jemmies were bad-ass enough as they were....

No kidding. Even the transition from spandex to polyester did nothing to masculinize Starfleet during the TNG Era. If anything, it showed us that men in skirts are accepted, as illustrated by the episode "Where no one has Gone Before." Now everyone wears loosely fitted catsuits...er, jumpsuits.
Solution: Update the TOS Movie Style Uniforms, incorporating the original series short hemlined dresses into the design. Sorry, women only on that one.

And it wouldn't have near the budgetary woes were it not horribly top heavy in the managment and incredibly inept as far as finacial planning. B&B and their henchman have rewarded themselves too well. Have you looked at the number of producers and executive producers and all those utterly supernamrary suits? I'll give you an idea, it's longer than the list of working personell.
As for financial planning the simple fact that they tend to not plan ahead, with even the most basic thing of having scripts ready with plenty of lead time. That means that as often as not they tended to have to spend time and money to duplicate things they've already done. There have been literally years of both being well publicized. It's that that's caused the corner cutting when it comes to production values.
And quite frankly, it's an utter cop out when shows like Babylon 5, Farscape, Stargate SG-1, and countless other managed to pull of a look and feel entirely reasonable for military societies. And most managed with a budget far, far less than Star Trek.

Maybe the Suliban's skin tight suits are needed to be like that so they can do their chameleon thing, where as a battle suit would not allow it.

It sound like an after the fact justification to me. They've used skin tight, or nearly so, catsuits time and again.

You mean those respectable-looking red ones that actually said "uniform"? Those were nice, but seemed stuffy. I like the latter-DS9 era look, with the colored tunic and dark jacket deal. At least then it didn't look like a slumber party.
As an aside, sometimes the catsuit thing works. I present Exhibit A: Major Kira.

Bravo. OMG. Hell Yes. Good call. I want to rant about several lovely trek ladies and their uniforms:
Seven- Since she was not officially a member of Starfleet and since Jeri Ryan is one of the most beautiful women alive, I guess I can forgive the catsuit thing. I can even overlook the high heels I've sworn I've seen from time to time. All that aside, I can only think of one reason why she would wear a tight garment like that. See, as a Borg, she basically ran around naked. So loose fitting clothes feel REALLY funny to her. I don't think I've ever seen her in anything starfleet issue, but then again I missed a few episodes.
Troi- Marina was awesome in the 'Starfleet Cheerleader' uniform in Ep. 1-2, and even better in the final episode. Hot hot hot. Which is why, in my book anyway, it would work great for a new series, but never in real life. Then there was the catsuit with the "Samurai hairdo," as well as the catsuits which came in two colors I know of...the maroon one and the lighter purple-ish one.
We have cheerleader syndrome again, minus the cheer. That's why she sported the low cut teal dress from time to time. I think it was when Ronny Cox as Captain Jelicho brought a 'certain formality' to the bridge of the Starship Enterprise and told Troi he would appreciate it if she wore standard uniform. And that's what we saw for most of the episodes after that. Thank you, Captain. I mean Admiral.
And who can forget Terry Farrell sporting the classic threads of old.?!?
I'll shut up now.

The best uniforms worn in Star Trek, by far are those of Senior Officers in the first season of TNG.

Gene Roddenberry made a conscious choice to make their uniforms look non-military. And once you create that precedent, subsequent producers feel compelled to maintain it. Hence you have this ridiculous situation where Star Trek seems to have completely forgotten concepts like "helmet" for ground troops.

The key is to strike a nice balance between both the military and exploration aspects of Starfleet. That is why I love the TOS and TNG movie uniforms:

The TNG movie uniforms did manage to bring back an element of military look to them. Same with the new dress uniforms.
