Apparently they're going to be making a massively multiplayer online game for Star Trek. Star Wars Galaxies for Trek. Thoughts, anyone?

Sounds like a cool idea.
Do you know what era they are going to set it in? TOS, TNG (VGR, DS9), ENT.

Frankly, this kind of sucks if everyone is limited to being a part of Starfleet.

If you can be Orion pirates or Klingon raiders, it might not suck.

Die Federation scum!

Actually, it'd suck to be Klingon, since you'd have to fight with Bat'leths. Orion pirate, though...

Or Romulan...

Will there be crafting?
At launch, the closest activities to crafting will be related to ship modification, repair and improvement.

"How will characters advance and grow?
Characters will gain skills and rank by completing missions assigned by Starfleet command or by otherwise advancing the needs of Starfleet."
Seems to me that you're going to be part of Starfleet. Unless they start employing mercenaries and pirates.
It would be kind of cool if it was set during the Dominion War. Smuggling, war profiteering, all kinds of neat stuff.

I would have thought the original series would be a better time for this sort of thing. More of a frontier feel to things.

The demographic they're going for probably doesn't have much experience with the original.

Depending on how they do it, that game could rule.
However, just being part of Starfleet would suck.
Unless I went rogue, swiped a Sovereign Class Starship and went on a rampage...
HMMMM....

I really hope that the warp core is fragile and secruity officers can pump up their phaser rifles to beyond kill levels.

I would like to see a game like Freelancer but more balanced. Travell around the galaxy, trade goods, do missions etc. And the ships would be balanced so a Galaxy wont get beaten by a Vorcha.

Its an appalling idea. The ST universe is not appropriate for an MMORPG. And that you can only be part of the UFP is even worse.

I hope for decent capital ship combat. That'd be fun as hell.

Silly to dismiss it as appalling at the moment, it's an preliminary announcement, a Beta launch is at least 2 years off, alot can happen between then and now.
I reckon it could and will work- some very exciting prospects, it makes sense at the moment that you can only be a feddie, since all series concentrate on them anyway- I'm sure should the game prove popular it will see plug ins and add ons which will allow you to play another series race (even though you're a feddie im sure you'll be able to be a vulcan, andorian and so on)

Interesting ideas if they use the ST universe.
Seriously they have material there...somehow only Starfleet would be a mistake.
Will wonder how it will turn out.

Yes, yes I know your want for money and miniskirts

.
Ah...now that would be cool...if the female outfits could be TOS minis. Now there was an outfit for the future!

Are those the same mini skirt outfits that male crew of the Enterprise D wore in the first series of TNG?

*shudder*
Meaning Uhura's outfit...the type that barely covered her butt when she stood up.
The man skirt they had in TNG were just bad on some many levels...

Man skirt? I don't remember that!
