Ronald D. Moore: Opinions?

Post by StarshipTitanic »

The little teasers for the upcoming Battlestar Galactica remake have me wondering, how good is Moore? I haven't seen much of Star Trek, and almost none of his work. Anyone care to share?

Upcoming? I thought it was out months ago. Or is there another one?

That was the pilot. The series is coming next January, ironically just before the final Star Wars movie. :D

I posted an interview with Moore some months back (whose link wouldn't work now, since my webspace has since died; my offer still stands, however, to send a copy to anyone interested in the text), in which he made some valid criticisms of Star Trek Voyager, as well as shed some light onto the inner workings (or lack thereof) in Voyager. He likes to bitch about the higher-ups; he blamed Insurrection on them, blamed Generations' failure on a "laundry list" of demands from him in another interview, as well as bitched about Berman making odd demands like never to mention Kirk's name in TNG.

Some elements from Moore's Voyager-bitching I could directly notice in his neo-BSG project; most blatant of them all was the line "we need to start having babies" or something like that, which was almost a direct quote of a line he said Janeway should have spoken during the aforementioned interview. This begs the question: did Moore hope that Voyager would become what he thought original-BSG should have been and tried (and failed) to use it as a vehicle to that purpose? Or is he basically using BSG as a personal vehicle to create what he feels Voyager should have been?

It's been too long since the neo-BSG discussions here (and too long since I saw it myself) for me to make any constructive criticisms about the show itself; I don't care for some of the visual details (exterior of the Galactica, shaky-camera bullshit, etc.) and I certainly don't like the "lol humanity's creation bites us in the ass, humans r dum, hubris will kill us all, etc." theme behind it all, but that's all quite subjective.

I liked his work for Deep Space Nine, and I found his comments about Voyager to be completely accurate.

I never really thought about his BSG to be a "remake" of Voyager before, but now I do see the similarities. I will watch the new BSG to see what he does with it even though I am disappointed with some of the changes that he made.

Do you think that, if he does impliment his Voyager ideas on BSG, it will turn out well?

It will turn out better then Voyager, that is for sure. If it will satisfy BSG fans, that remains to be seen...

I think Voyager wouldn't have achieved the level of criticism and crapiness that it did if the PTB had been willing to entertain more status-quo changes related to ship-life and relationships. Of course, there's no way to be certain and short of an Ultimate Voyager series (novel or comic), we'll never know.
