Manny Coto to the rescue!

Coto Goes Back To Trek Roots

Manny Coto, co-executive producer of UPN's Star Trek: Enterprise, told SCI FI Wire that as one of the show's new head writers, he wants the show to link up more with the original Star Trek series and its subsequent series. "I'm a fan of the ... original [Star] Trek," Coto said in an interview at UPN's fall press tour in Los Angeles. "And season four for me is going to be everything I, as an old Star Trek fan, would want to see on Enterprise, Which is basically a lot of touchstones connecting Enterprise with the old series and with the Next Generation series."

For Coto, that in part means incorporating more of the original series' aliens, such as the green-skinned Orions from "Shadowplay," as well as the more familiar Andorians and Vulcans. "A lot of people have noticed that the Vulcans on Enterprise don't behave like the Vulcans from the Kirk era and/or the Next Generation era," Coto said. "The Vulcans on Enterprise are more impulsive. They actually are somewhat more emotional. They lie. They don't have the same kind of values that the Vulcans that we know of."

To bridge the gap, Coto envisions a story arc in which a revolutionary Vulcan—Coto calls him a "Lawrence of Arabia" of Vulcan—proclaims that Vulcans have strayed from the teachings of Surak, the legendary Vulcan who ushered in the Time of Awakening and founded the movement based on logic and peace. "And this character will lead a revolution on Vulcan, which will bring Vulcan and Vulcan ideals to where we know them in the later series," Coto said. "And Enterprise will get involved in this." As a result of this resurgence, the political situation with the Andorians changes, and mysterious dissidents on the planet Vulcan attempt to stir up a civil war (and will later be revealed to have been Romulans in disguise), he added. "That's an example of the kinds of stories that we're going to tell this season," Coto said.

Star Trek: Enterprise returns to UPN on Oct. 8 in its new 8 p.m. ET/PT Friday timeslot.
And there was much rejoicing. :)

Pretty much already posted in the Season 4 thread, where there has been much decrying of "bullshit!"

Hmmm, Romulans, eh? I thought the Federation never saw them in person until Kirk´s time. Ah, well. *lalalalalalalala*

I wonder if this moron actually knew who TE Lawrence was, and what made him so important, and what he did.

Basically, if there's a character whos's Vulcan 'Lawrence of Arabia', it MUST mean he isn't a Vulcan. In other words, a Romulan or Human or someone has to come to Vulcan, embrace one particular clan or sect and lead a 'revolt' of sorts. That is, if you take Coto's analogy too literally...

The article says "a revolutionary Vulcan." Pretty much makes it a Vulcan.

Then Coto's analogy is stupid.

[EDIT] And if it were a Romulan, in the midst of the EARTH-ROMULAN WARS, the analogy would fit BRILLIANTLY.

[EDIT 2] Not that it's a big deal, but if you're going to make analogies at least make them relevant. It sounds like this 'Revolutionary Vulcan' is a Lenin, not a Lawrence.

So in other words, Enterprise having already taken credit for everything else in Star Trek, it will now take credit for how Vulcans are from TOS onward too.

Brilliant.

Well, in this case, it's to fix something that the season 1-3 writers screwed up... Had Coto been on board from the beginning, this likely wouldn't be necessary.
Later...

They´re just name-dropping or giving cameos to random people or races just because they were in other ST series, not because they help solidify existing ST-continuity (often bungeling it up: Romulans on viewscreens, anyone?)

They've never shown Romulans on viewscreens in Enterprise.

(Unless you believe, as some do, that many of the Vulcans we've seen in the show were actually Romulans spies, which would explain how un-Vulcan-like they act at times.)

They could have it where only Archer, Reed and a few others see what the Romulans look like and are either sworn to secrecy or willingly have their memories of it erased.

Or they could wait to have it occur around the season finale and kill them.

What I'm trying to say is that they're simply writing the stories they want to tell and simply grabbing a name from TOS and using it, usually with a disregard to logical extensions of what they've done. Genuine continuity would be to tell the story as it's set out (or at least reasonably so) instead of simply doing whatever and grabbing a name that vaguely fits.

Got it, and agreed with completely. They've got a whole galaxy of creatures, and yet somehow all the famous movers and shakers are somebodies relatives and decendents.

It's not really that, it's more along the lines of what VT-16 said above.

Well, it was partly agreement and partly personal rant.
