Damn, humans in ST are idiots...

Have you ever considered how easy it would be to protect a Starfleet ship from boarding parties? It's laughable!

It's just ridiculous. It would be so easy to load the ship full of holo-emitters and create all sort of automated defenses. Turrets, for instance? It wouldn't be hard to create a few flying minigun-phasers...
Or walls. Just put some holographic walls everywhere and confuse the enemy senseless. Or just create some kind of holo-critter and set it loose.

Another great idea would be to just use forcefields in combination with poison - or tranquilizer - gas. Or just shut down gravity and send in a security team with magnetic boots.

To make things especially easy, one would just need to beam every hostile out of there...

But NO. THis doesn't happen, because it's not "exicting" that way...

In star trek TNG, Humans are Extinct. A bunch of Tau after a massive drinking binge wicth lasted a year, then they killed them all the Humans, had massive plastic Surgery done to themselfs to make them look like Humans.

Isn't this kind of pointing out the obvious? Although, the one race that's possibly even more incompetent than humanity is the klingons, but no real need to go there.

The dominion continiously made stupid tactical decissions as well.

Let's blame the writers....

1) Hey, wow, and then when they knock out power systems, all of the fancy fanwank autodefenses disappear. Brilliant idea indeed.

2) They do have intruder control gas; we've seen it in TOS Space Seed, as well as other episodes which escape me right now.

3) If they shut down gravity but magnetic boots still worked, couldn't the intruders just adapt by wearing magnetic boots themselves? (Hey, they did... we saw this in ST6)

4) All the intruders have to do is beam aboard a transport inhibitor, then switch it on and keep it with their teams. Then they can move to take over the ship's transporter systems.

OR, the transporters could be disabled by exterior attack. Hello Nemesis.

Better yet, the Federation could just line their ship with materials known to block transporters. At least that way invaders would have to dock and cut their way through the hull, giving the Feds a means to bottleneck the intruders. Now if they could only advance their close quarter tactics beyond the point of standing out in the open in their PJs and firing their TV remotes, er phasers, blindly at the enemy.

Having competent security personal would be more effective

Er... then how are they supposed to transport in and out of the ship? :?

Wicked Pilot is a pilot, see. He wants the Federation ships to not use transporters, thereby increasing the use and necessity for pilots and shuttles. It's quite cunning of him, really. :P

Have a peice of armor which can physically open and close to allow the transport beams in and out. You would simply locate the transporter room near the hull to minimize the size of the 'door'.

EDIT:

That too.

I can see some merit in using holograms to disrupt boarders. I would use them in a more subtle fashion, for purposes of psychological warfare. When the ship's sensors detect a boarding party, it could locate their eyes, ears, noses, etc. and project phony input directly onto their sensory organs. The false sensations would be things meant to put them on edge, like the scent of nerve gas, the sound of a person screaming a long way off, something moving fast seen out the corner of the eye, or the feeling of being tapped on the shoulder. It would take less energy than to create larger and more flashy illusions, and would make the boarders vulnerable, making them easier to beat. This would require a very accurate set of projectors and sensors, but with some time and effort, I would imagine it's within the Federation's capabilities.

How is that within the Federation's capabilities? In order for that to work the entire ship has to be a holodeck.

It would be cheaper to train marines and arm them with decent weaponry, as well as armour the ships to block transporters.

Just a nitpick, but nerve gas is odourless. Now by all means use the scent of mustard gas, phosegene or tear gas. Using actual tear gas would really fuck them up, considering that we've never seen any kind of NBC gear in ST.

They could replicate some fucking AK-47's and whip those damn pansy ass phasers ou the windows. Then we'd see some interesting fights.

Klingon: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. I have a knife arrrrgh.
Feddy W/ AK: I have an AK-47.
Klingon: What's tha*sound of bullets impacting flesh*

I feel real comfortable saying there is no way in hell that the Federation(TNG era) could ever scrape up the mindset and sheer brass required to make a even half decent marine corp.

We're not a military, WTF?!?

*shrugs* It's the most practical solution.

Agreed but they'll never do it.

That would require Starfleet to actually armour their ships, of course.

Is there anything under discussion here that hasn't been beaten to death before? Because I'm not in much of a mood for "hurf hurf hurf, teh Federation iz st00p1d!!!!111!!oneone!! LOLOLOL" threads.

I really think the PST forum needs a sticky thread linking to threads that tend to get overdone, as well as compiling general "We've already heard..." factoids and ideas that don't need to be rehashed as well.

That's not a bad idea, actually. I shall reward you with everyone's favorite thread locked pic, as I have decided this thread is little but me-too spam.
