Am I wrong in assuming that Enterprise posesses some type of engine louvers?

The Movie Enterprise (along with Reliant and Excelsior) do not posess the Neon glowing engines (blue and red) of TNG vessels, yet they operate at roughly the same speeds (not top speed mind you).

So, are the blackened portions of the the "Movie" vessels a type of engine louver/blastshield that protects the neon glowing parts when not in use?

The nacelles on the Enterprise do light up, but only the interior sides of them and only when they're at warp speed.

IIRC, an early concept drawing for the ship had energy arcs going between the nacelles while they were at warp, which would presumably demonstrate why they were kept on pylons away from the crew.

I just checked, and this effect isn't done in ST5; however, given the substandard quality of the effects house they used, I'm not at all surprised.

It is used in ST6, as well as 1, 2, 3, and 4.
