Ok, this has been bugging me for some time.
Can anyone explain to me why the person the Cardassians put in charge of the occupation of Bajor lived and had his office on an ore processing station in orbit, rather than in a beautiful grand villa on the surface commandeered from some important Bajoran (or built by Bajoran slave labor)?
Makes no sense to me.
At least have his office be in a military installation.

Bajor was pretty devastated by the Cardassian Occupation, and resistance was particularly fierce. Those two should cover most of it.

Terok Nor is much easier for the Cardassians to secure and keep weapons away from the Prefect. As it is only one attempt was made against a Prefect thanks to this security.

Well, Bajor didn't seem too devastated in Emissary (the ep). Pretty nice vistas, iirc. But I digress.

Still, I find a mining station somewhat hard to swallow.
Imagine the Americans putting the head of the American occupation force on an oil rig off the Iraqi coast - while still using it primarily to pump oil.

While it was used as an ore processing station (can't mine from space really), Terok Nor was much more then that. It had a notable civilian population and was a fleet support asset as well. Its more in line with a shipyard.

Remember we only see a brief view of Bajor and it's condition, and then we move on. It could be that district was untouched by the war.

It wasn't really a mining station, it was probably built by the Cardassians as a multi-role platform, and it's "official" designation was mining platform. Or "ore-processing station."

Perhaps a Cardassian Starbase? It seemed to be used for that purpose by Starfleet when they took over, during the Dominion War.

[edit]@Lord Sander: Perhaps Dukat split his time between the Station and Bajor's surface? Or there was already a representative on the surface, leaving Dukat up in orbit and "safer."

Terek Nor was indeed a Cardassian Starbase. It is the largest Cardassian space station seen in Star Trek.

Don't forget Terok Nor's "twin", Empok Nor .

We saw another Cardassian starbase of a different type, which Kira, Odo, Garak, and Damar boarded covertly in order to steal a Jem'Hadar fighter that was being fitted with a Breen energy dampening weapon. (Episode "Tacking Into the Wind", Season 7). It's been a while since I saw that episode, but that base was quite large. I'm not sure how it's size compares with the Terok Nor-class stations, however.

There is also another Cardassian starbase called the Litvok Nor. But it is from the Bridgecommander computer game and so it is not canon.

Um no. The Cardasian shipyards in the season 7 openers were FAR larger then DS9. Not on the level of Starbase 74 or anything, but preaty dang impressive none the less.

What about that Nor station that Quark and Rom went to to get their mother back from the Dominion, only to be ambushed? I think it was abandoned, so they showed it with a severe list to one side(if a station can list, in space no less).

There are two types of Cardassian starbases I think. One is the DS9 type and other is a more numerous type seen orbiting Cardassia Prime in DS9 final and serves as the Cardassian starbase in the Armada game.
