pure battleships

Post by Antares »

Are there any ships in the federation that are only designed for combat?
I just wondered if such ships exist. The ships that come to my mind then are the Prometheus class, the Achilles class and the Defiant class.

Are there any more?

Steamrunner I think was designed with combat in mind.

Wasn't the Akira as well? Pretty much any ship built after the re-design thing post Wolf 359 was combat geared. Atleast I think so.. :?

Defiant's the only pure warship, as in designed solely for combat, no science labs, no exploration gear, nothing but weapons, engines, shields, and crew space that I know of.

From what little we know, it seems that Norway was designed as some kind of patrol vessel.

The achilles can be seen very short at the end of the voyager series.
Its part of the defense force.

I have seen both episodes only once so i might be wrong.

Achilles is a non-canon ship.

Prommys, Defiants, Akiras, Sovereigns, War-Galaxys and Steamrunners are warships.

Never heard of it. Voyager, I'm assuming? I didn't watch Voyager because I lost interest. Never even heard how much it sucked until the series was over.

Its from the episode "Message in a Bottle". Probably Voyagers best episode.

The Doctor gets sent back to the Alpha Quadrant, and end up on a prototype battleship, the Prometheus, thats been captured by Romulans. He and the EMH Mk. II have to recapture the ship. Hillarity ensues. Also the Prometheus' "Multi Vector Attack Mode"" was rather nice, despite what some people say ^^

Also of note is that the Feds when they arrived didn't bother with diplomacy. 2 Defiants and an Akira came in guns blazing :D

If regular Galaxies were upgraded to War Galaxies, then what of the Nebulas (which were designed, if I recall, as a cheaper alternative to the Galaxies)? Or does that not count, given the flexible nature of the Nebula class - by that, I mean if the mission is combat related they put on that torpedo "rollbar," if the mission is scientific they put on, I assume, a spacelab in the same area.

The Nebula class has always interested me because it looks cool, in a weird sort of way. Was it upgraded alongside the Galaxies, or were such upgrades unnecessary?

Depends really, for it seems that in the 2360's to 2370's, ships turned from explorers with combat capability to combat ships with exploration capabilities.

The Sov and Steamrunner and to a lesser extent, the Akira seem to follow these lines. Ships like the Defient are 'pure' combat ships, but even at that they are limited in what they can do due to size and scope.

The Prometheus seems to be a real sized realization of the Defient.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

The Sovergein is a pure warship since it is designed for combat and has no civilians onboard.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

But it has science labs, exploration loadouts, and whatnot as well, correct? Not a pure warship unless its designed along the lines of the U.S.S. Iowa, not the U.S.S. Iowa with oceanography and marine biology labs mixed in everywhere.

There are no Federation ship without a science lab. Even the pure warship Defiant has science labs. So it not unusal for the Sovergein to have science lab even though it is a pure warship.

Do you consider the Constitution class a pure warship just because there's no civilians on board?

Werent they mentioned or shown in 'The Ship'? I have a hazy memory of some sort of laboratory.... it was one of the episodes where the Defiant gets a chunk taken out of it at least...

Not sure about the Defiant but the other Fed ships like the Enterprise-D and Voyger had science labs. Please correct me if I am wrong.

considering how technobabble saved their asses all the time, one would wonder if science lab is actually an useful asset on warships.....
