I am sure that a lot of people have seen these around since the DS9 Technical Manual has been out for several years now but I don't remember seeing these patches posted here and I always thought they were pretty cool.
Someone should turn them into Avatars. That Defiant one is really kickass.

Easily. Someone at SB.com onced used the Defiant one as an Avatar and I could still read Assimilate This! and they had a smaller Avatar at that.

easiest way that i've found to make such a large image into an avatar: if you have windows xp view it with thumbnail mode in its folder, then take a screenshot. copy/paste the screencap into paint, and cut out the square thumbnail. bam, instant avatar that should meet the size and file restrictions of most webboards.
"It's you Americans. There's something about nipples you hate. If this were Germany, we'd be romping around naked on the stage here."
They're both pretty cool, but the Defiant one defininately kicks arse. They ought to paint that image on the side, above the words USS Defiant.

It would look even better if someone could change the white background into transparent. That way the nose of the Defiant spills out of the Avatar but the background remains whatever the page is set on.

I dunno, I think it could reflect the personality of the teams that were on the respective development projects. The Runabout project was, I'd bet, a comparatively small operation, and as such they probably a) didn't take their project as "seriously" as a bigger starship project, and b) were probably all able to agree on a patch which is more aesthetic.
Similarly, the Defiant project probably had a majority of the more militaristic Starfleet personnel, and as such they were more agreeable to a more badass patch.
On the other hand, a gigantic mass of bureaucracy such as the Galaxy Class project was probably so huge that nobody would agree on any sort of art to represent it, so they went with the comparatively bland patch seen in the TNG TM.
