In SW we see that it's relatively easy if you have the money to have your own private ship. Have any of you ever seen people in the Federation own or have their own private ship?

And in TOS Harry Mudd has a ship too.

Since money isn't used in the Federation how do they get them then? Do they just reqeust one or something?

Perhaps they barter with other races for a starship.

Mike points out a lack of private starships indicates the Federation might be a communist society. We dont see much in the way of private corporations at all in TNG.

Another question about how you aquire a private starship, is how do you aquire living quarters? I want a condo facing the "historical park with a old time farm" . Can you imagine having a large grove of trees as a neighbor. Makes for quiet living. I know that is "worth" more than the condo that faces the a busy street. So if there is no money who determines who gets what?

If they're really communist, then it can be determined the same way as it was in Soviet Russia, based on the kind of connections you have.

On the issue of the ship

Seems to imply while she will be working for them she will still be using her own ship, this is backed up by the fact that her ship after she starts working for the Bajorans has the same name as the ship she was using before (and I think it looks the same but I don't know for sure).

In short everything points to that ship being her property.

Dax, Bashir and O’Brien all have Latinium as well, I would guess others have it although I can't remember specific incidents of them using it off hand.

I do know Riker has Latinium (although Quark couldn't afford to pay him in it he must have had some to be palying Dabbo in the first place) so it doesn't seem like just people on DS9 have it.

In the TNG pilot did'nt we see Dr Crusher order some fabric from a street vendor and ask for it to be charged to her account?

yes. from what i've seen they mostly use credits......but there are some places where Federation credits aren't good for a whole lot, thus the use of gold pressed latinum. as near as i can tell anyway

Okona is a person of dubious origins, and Harry Mudd is a known criminal. What makes you think that either of these people acquired a ship through legal, Federation channels?

She wasn't on a Federation planet, and the locals were tseeking Federation membership. It's likely that all Starfleet officers on the planet were given local credit to gain favor. If not, it would still be pretty easy for a Federation officer to trade something unavailable on the planet for some local currency.

Actually the only truly legal bit of ST I can think of anyone saying they own a vessel is Scotty(and no not the ship he's bragging in ST6, I thought the vessel in Relic was his...or am I just going off kilter?).

And whats interesting is in the Naked Now (or something like that). When the crew of the Enterprise-D were all "intoxicated", Tasha Yar went to Deana's quarters looking for something to wear and she "infects" Deana and then says she will find what to wear at the ship's stores. If the Enterprise is the Federation flagship and there is not supposed to be money and capitalism, why would there be stores.

actually i remember in one episode when data was attempting to get some type of gift for o'brien and keiko's wedding he was using some type of industrial replicator to select a gift in what appeared to be a store of sorts.

He and Worf were both just looking through a database of knick-knack designs available to the ship's replicator system; there was nothing special about it.

ah. it's been a good while since i've seen that episode. it appeared to be in some special room or something, though i wasn't entirely sure.
