not for certain. speculation was that other races got sick of them dropping by unannounced for tea and bombed their planet back to the Stone Age, except they may have gotten away through still operable gateways... so no, we never really did find out what happened to them.

Or maybe they all moved to different planets and slowly integrated the societies of these planets. :?

I once read a good Trek fanfic that the Iconians fled into one of those demensional doors into another part of the galaxy and built up a large space Empire. And later sends a enourmus fleet to the Alpha Quadrant and wage war against the Federation/Klingons.

My question is, why did it take so long for the Federation or the Romulans to discover the planet. The Neutral Zone was almost 200 years old by the time of TNG, I would have thought that they would have at least charted all of the class-M planets by then.

There was a ST novel (The Devil's Heart) that had what happened to the Iconians as a sub plot. The Iconians had several colonies that survived and formed new societies.

It's possible neither the Feds nor the Romulans bothered to chart it or the M-class worlds since they technically weren't allowed to go inside of it without risking a war. Although it does seem very foolish, considering that knowledge of that territory could be potentially vital should a war break out.

Iconian lab, located on their homeworld.

Scientist #1: Hey, I invented a new computer operating system today.
Scientist #2: Good work.
Scientist #1: Thanks. I've already taken the liberty of installing it in every computer system in the empire.
Scientist #2: Don't you think it's kind of dangerous to do that? I mean, it's untested.
Scientist #1: Naw, I'm sure it's safe. What could possibly happen?
Scientist #2: Well, it looks nice. What's it called?
Scientist #1: I think I'll call it Millenium Edition...

AS pure speculation, if a very infectious and deadly virus was encountered, quaratine would be near impossible with their gates and it could have spread to all of their worlds.

Sounds like the end of the 4th Empire ( Dahakverse ).

My best guess is that the Iconians last heard dialogue starting with "WE ARE THE BORG.".

The gateway on the Iconanian homeworld was still functional when Picard found it. It was online and leading to some Earth like planet. Probobly thats where the Iconians went as Picard believed.
