The Cardassian DMZ

Post by Enola Straight »

When the UFP ceeded territorry to the Cardassian Union, the plan of forcefully removing the Federation colonists proved non-viable.

Now that the Dominion war is over and the Cardassian nation has been shattered and lies in ruin, what is the status of the DMZ and former Federation citizens?

In an idle Trekverse, there would be no DMZ, or it would atleast be reset deeper into Cardassian space. The former Feddie colonies would return to the Federation.

But, knowing those hippy commies running the Federation, the DMZ+colonies will remain with the Cardassians. Or worst, the Federation will probablly concede territory to them.

I don't recall it being addressed in the show, though the population estimates placed the Maquis colonies in the "hundreds of thousands" area. (ref. "Pre-emptive Strike" and "Blaze of Glory" DS9) Given how fucked up the Federation's priorities and interests are, I highly doubt the surviving Maquis colonists (assuming there are any) would run back to the Federation. They would probably resettle on an independent colony (I don't remember the colony's name, but little Ezri's folks are from there).

Another possibility is the surviving Maquis finally ridding themselves of the Cardassians. In which case the former DMZ is now the current Maquis Republic/Nation/Whatever.

The DMZ is finished anyway. After the war, what was the state of the Cardassian military? How can they enforce the DMZ when they have more pressing matters - such as defending their homeworld from opportunistic parties? This is assuming the Cardassian military is still functional; perhaps one of the tenets of the treaty called for complete disarmament, but I can't recall that in the final episode. (on an unrelated note, I fell asleep watching that episode - though I'm sure I am not the only one. )

In the Voyager episode "Hunters" the crew learned that the Dominion had wiped out the Maquis. I don't recall the specifics, but checking that episode might give you more info about the state of the DMZ after the war.

Was it ever explained why some Fed colonies ended up on the Cardie side of the border in the DMZ?

They probably just drew an abitrary line across the border and it didn't match up that well.
