What does "Kobayashi Maru" translate from Japanese?

I googled without success.

I'm not sure but it was taken from an Asian family that lived next door to Roddenberry, the Kobyashi Marus.

Note: Kobayashi is a common family name. Maru is a suffix that indicates ship's name.

Kobyashi might be the family name, but as Sidious pointed out Maru is simply a suffix attached to the end of a Japanese merchant vessel.

My fiance's last name is 'Kobayashi.' And they said SHE could not be won either!

Well, it seems pretty simple then. The Kobayashi part came from some family, and Maru was added because the ship that Starfleet captains have to use in the simulation is a merchant vessel IIRC.

It's about where the name of the ship came from and what it means.

Not what the name was.
