Star Trek - Real Friends

I finished watching the Season 6 DVD's for DS9. One of the special features on the DS9 DVD's is something called Crew Dossiers. Each crew member gets a 15 minute short on the history of their character in DS9 and highlights a few of their favorite episodes where their character shines.
The Miles O'brien and Doctor Bashir crew dossier both spend time on stating that their's was teh only true friendship portrayed on Trek. That all the other realtionships were more professional. This made me snort derisively when immediately thinking back to the Kirk-Spock-McCoy relationship.
Then in Bashir's dossier they specifically mention how Kirk and Spock did not have a real freindship. Now I ask you, is this a true statement. Is the Kirk Spock relaitonship a purely professional relationship? As my sole bit of evidence to show how full of shit and self congratulatory this DS9 masturbatory nonsense about their characters and show's greatness is I point to City on the Edge of forever as prime example of the Kirk Spock friendship.
And to add icing ot the cake ST:III where Kirk sacrifices his career, his ship and his son to save Spock's soul.
Thoughts?
PS: Voyager can claim the same with the Harry Kim and Tom Paris freindship.

Kirk, Spock, and McCoy had the best friendship of any characters in all of Star Trek. The people in charge of the new series are simply full of shit. They believe that if they didn't show them sitting around playing poker, they weren't real friends. What a crock of shit; they demonstrated their friendship through actions while on duty, not through painfully unnecessary scenes designed to make the "friendship" ridiculously obvious to the viewing audience.

Right, because, if I'm about to die, I'll transfer my soul into the body of a professional acquaintence. Jesus Christ.
Among new Trek's many flaws is just how self absorbed it is.

Out of all the TNG+ character, I'd say those were the only ones that were real, close friends. The others either seemed to be proffessional freindship or fuck buddies.
But Kirk, Spock, and McCoy definitely were friends. Look at the way they act around each other in addition to the sacrifices they made on Spock's behalf. And when you get down to it, Kirk was also pretty close with Scotty as well, certainly beyond a mere proffesional relationship.

Pfft, STII proved that the friendship between Kirk, Spock and Bones was more than professional. I mean, Spock chose Bones to carry his contra and how about the goodbye between Kirk and Spock?

Horseshit, pure and simple. Clearly those guys didn't watch the last ten or fifteen minutes of The Wrath of Kahn. Where Scotty and the engineers have to physically hold back Kirk, or when he cries out to Spock with such anguish and despair. That's no "professional relationship."

That's what all of those Kirk/Spock writers have been trying to tell us for years. That relationship is something else altogether
Really, I don't see how they couldn't think of Kirk, Spock & McCoy as friends. If ST II didn't convince them how about that camping trip in ST V. They were on vacation together. I don't know about the rest of you but I have never gone on vacation with professional aquaintences. If they were only on liberty I have done things like that with shipmates but I've never bought any of them birthday presents.

I have been - and always will be - your friend...Live. Long. And. Prosper.
-Spock
Yeah sure. Nothing there as Spock dies, Kirk emotionaly breaks down over it and Bones is entrusted with his soul. Uh huh....

O'Brien/Bashir the "only true friendship" in
Trek, eh? Pure Grade-A bullshit. Sounds like they also never bothered to watch
any of TOS, TAS, and the
FIRST SIX FUCKING MOVIES.
But I forget; Kirk, Spock, and McCoy never played "Battle of Britain" on the holodeck together.

Or hell, what about Picard and Guinan? Or Geordi and Data? They're not so casual buddy-buddy, but they're still friendships.

Eh, no. His contra was essentially a copy of his spirit.

Somewhat strangely, it was McCoy and Spock's constant bickering that made it obvious what good friends the whole trio of them were.

Nice to see they gloss over a variety of episodes and six movies to come to the conclusion that Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are just professional acquantiances.
Hell I rate most of the crew of TOS and how they felt for each other. Numerous times through the movies past 2 they risk everything, and for what? So they can see who bags Uhura first? Kirk/Spock/McCoy is the strongest of them...hardly the only one, and certainly above Bashir/O'Brien.

Those weren't friendship. Picard and Guinan were more advisee-advisor even if he trusted her. It would be hard to treat it as friendship exactly.
There was a proffesional friendships and a sort of mentoring relationship there. I wouldn't necessarily call it friendship though it could well have evolved into it.

In the special features of the DVD of The Wrath of Kahn the director states that he see the Kirk-Spock-McCoy friendship as the great trilogy. In that they are a team that totally compliments each others strengths and weeknesses and Kahn will be the one to break up this great friendship team literally blowing it apart!

Hell, TOS was fucking brimming with real friendships: Kirk-Spock-McCoy, Kirk-Scotty, later Sulu-Chekov, and there was a weird little Scotty-Uhura thing going in ST:V. In TNG itself the only real friendship was Data-LaForge, and even as close as that was to being a real friendship, it came off as a fucking contrivance as often as not. They tried to pull off a Data-LaForge-Weasley friendship thing, but that apparently became as obvious to them in its lameness as it was to most of the audience.
To say that O'Brien and Bashir's friendship was the first real friendship in Trek is pretentious bullshit in its most concentrated form.

indeed it is. in ST:V Kirk, Spock and McCoy go camping together, not something you do on your vacation with people you work with unless you are good friends.
I think part of this comes from the whole bit of them wanting to show how DS9 and TNG and such are on the same level as TOS if not above it. But that is in their opinion.

It would be kinda hard to live and work on the same ship with the same people day in day out for years and not become friends with them. Add to this combat and a few dozen "...saved my life..." situations and so on, I'd bet that pretty much every character in the main cast of any Trek show would call the others friends.

So, I guess Spock's excitement at seeing Kirk alive and well at the end of "Amok Time" had nothing to do with friendship. BS!

Of course it wasn't friendship, you newbie. Spock was relieved that SF hadn't lost a capable Captain.

Not that it hasn't been mentioned already...
Spock wrote:I have, and will always be, your friend.
There's no getting around it. They can't accuse Spock of playing hyperbole, because he never did that kind of thing. If Spock said it, it was the truth - as best he knew it. What made that moment as powerful as it was, is that Spock wasn't prone to emotional outbursts. While you can't really call that an "outburst", it was surely emotional. If Spock said he's your friend, then dammit, he's your friend.
