The Earth/Romulan War That Might Have Been...

Post by Patrick Degan »

Read and weep:

http://www.starfleet-museum.org/romulan-cruisers.htm

If only the Two Pinheads had even a fraction of the imagination and care of that dedicated Trek fan. Imagine the possibilities which will never be realised.

The whole site is worth a perusal:

I believe the latest Ent episode had less than 3 million viewers. Hmmm... It started with 12.5 million and now less than 3 million? And the show is still on? What keeps it alive?

Edit: Whoops I forgot to comment on the site. The information on the site is it canon?
It looks to be a decent site, with plentifull info. I will look into it when I have time.

I absolutely love the Starfleet Museum and everything in it. A truly fantastic website, in my opinion.

It pretty much revived my interest in TOS recently...

LOL - the UES Fireball XL5? :) I like some of the designs there, although I feel that some of them are little too colourful, even for space. I quite like the Romulan progression though...

I've liked the museum since I first saw it. The ships from the early Feddie era look nice. The Asia Class looks almost exactly like a Connie.

Yeah we could've had a fantastic war that was hinted throughout TOS involving a mysterious race(the Rommies) and the Federation. It would've also been possibly a more true war then what DS9's with the Founders. Perhaps we wouldn't have a central character agonize every descion and if done correctly we would've seen the foundations of the TOS Federation.

Instead we got two hopped up morons putting women into catsuits and give us pointless storylines that go nowhere.

Thank you Paramount.

They are. Such is stated in the actual articles that the names listed for all Romulan ships are unofficial nicknames given by the UE/UFP Starfleets.

Sadly, it is not canon. Masao Ozakai essentially built upon the little snippets of information from TOS, drew from sources such as the original Franz Joseph Schnaubelt tech manual, Bjo Trimble's Star Trek Concordance, and The Star Trek Chronology as well as a couple of the best novels (I suspect Diane Duane's and John Ford's) and several fan-produced fleet guides and tech manuals, and added in some very logical conjectures of his own to produce the starship designs and the history of the United Earth Alliance and the Earth/Romulan War. He evidently put in a lot of consideration and care into his work —as well as some subtle humour. And he seems to have some of the same instincts toward starship design that Matt Jeffries possesed and managed very well to flesh out the line of progression from the "primitive" space vessels of the UESN to the familiar fleets of the TOS era.

This is the way the Trek universe should have been developed but wasn't.

Shame there's no way to make it canon.

For the Twilight War fanfic I needed to have more well rounded ship classes for the TOS era ships to go against the modern era Federation. This site has some very cool ideas but I'm hesitant to use them because:
They aren't mine
They aren't really canon.

Its a damn shame because I could imagine some battle scenes with these beautifully rendered ships.

Same boat, Stravo. I want to atleast attempt a battle scene with a Pre-Toss era ship from the museum.

Given Mr. Ozakai's evident sense of humour, it could also be a takeoff from a line in a Monty Python skit in reference to the Luftwaffe: "Cabbage crates coming over the Briney".

Yeah, yeah. At this point I really don't care anymore. Trek is dead, at least
until B&B are shot dead and the control of Trek is placed back into the hands
of competent people. So why spend time dreaming about what-ifs?

I mean, I don't mean to be a total shithead, but I'm sort of burned out at
this point on Trek.

Well, the articles make for a nice read every so often.

I've easily read the entire site at least five times, myself...

True, I can see how the Romulan Warbird design of TOS evolved from the
Cabbage. But still, I'm a bit apathetic on the whole thing.

Yeah too bad it will never be declared canon.

Oh well.

I also like the markings and nomenclature of the UESN, IMHO it's a lot better than Starfleet's.

You just love anything with CVL, CL, etc before it instead of NCC :P

Of course. At least with traditional nomenclature we can easily identify what type of ship it is and where it stands in relation to others of its type.

The markings look better, too, I like the big United Earth symbol with the hull number overlaid on top.

Try going here. It's got some books from Last Unicorn Games that were never released, including a Ship Recognition Manual for TOS (and pre-TOS) era ships. From Antares to Voroth, and it includes Klingon, Romulan, and Tholian vessels (as well as the Planet Killer and the Nomad), and civilian vessels. Since it was due to be published as part of the Star Trek RPG, it is (AFAIK) at least official for canonicity.
