The Borg and the Holodeck

Post by Sharp-kun »

Just a thought that occured to me last night:

What would happen if someone created a simulation of a cube, turned of the safety protocols, and got assimilated by a holographics drone? Would the be assimilated for real? Even though the nanoprobes would be holographic, they would still mess up the victim.

The holodeck is still constrained by the limits of Federation replicator technology. Since there is no evidence that they can replicate nanoprobes (indeed, the fact that they had to harvest them from Seven on numerous occasions argues against it) it is likely that such a simulation just wouldn't work.

On top of that, there's also definite limitations on the 'resolution' of holodecks. In 'Phage' (VOY), I recall that Neelix was forced to stay still in a metal bed after his lungs managed to get stolen. (At the time, they were using medical holographic tech to simulate them instead.)

Fair enough.

Now asuming they could replicate them, what would happen, hypothetically?

In one episode of voyger I saw the holodeck could produce sensors that were more effective than any real, sensor they had on the ship so the holodeck is not as "constrained" as it would appear.
You can judge the character of a person by what they fear

Well, if they are using replicated Borg Nanoprobes (replicated as in real), then the victim gets assimilated for real, pure and simple.

If we are talking holographic nanoprobes, it would depend on there programming. In theory, you could assimliate someone with holographic nanoprobes while they were in the holodeck.
However, it would be pointless (and perhaps dangerous) unless the assimlation process created real componets that would exsist outside the holodeck.

Otherwise the assimlatation victim could just step out of the holodeck and the implants would disappear. Depending on the level of assimlation, that could be fatal.
