Enterprise 3x03 Extinction *SPOILERS*

I never really make a judgement on an episode until i've had some discussion on it, but there were some thoughts i had while watching this one:

1. Another disease threatens the crew, we only have so much time until they are irreversible blah blah blah. TOS did it better in "The Naked Time". TNG did it better in "Identity Crisis." I am really becoming tired of these "homages" or whatever the fuck B&B wanna call them...

2. Some of the stuff in this episode is blatantly retarded. I half expected Archer to start humping T'Pol's leg after his transformation.

3. Every so often in TOS a redshirt died. This signaled to the audience that there was a serious threat. This helped the drama of the show and pull the audience in. So far in almost a third of modern Trek's 7 year run, there has been what one maybe two crewmen dead?. And they just glanced over it. How much better would this episode have been if one of Archer's redshirts got roasted alive in front of him. In TOS Kirk almost always said something as he stood over the cannon fodder. Hoshi having to deal with the horror of watching it. Archer feeling guilty he couldn't save him. Phlox knowing there was nothing he could do.

4. What the hell is the point of adding on these MACO's? They barely give the MAIN cast any screen time(Ensign Token Mayweather, Ensign Hoshi "I am the hotter chick" Sato), so why the hell did they make a big fuss about some of these actors? [start random pissed off ENT moment]One thing that seriously pisses me off is the wasting of the talent of Tucker Smallwood. They guy over at First TV Drama made this same point when he reviewed 3x01. Could you imagine how much better the show would be if Captain Beckett had Commodore Ross as the Maco leader? Especially if they actually gave him some real screen time? Archer with the touchy feely modern Trek crap and Smallwood as the Shoot first ask questions later bad mofo? Instead they try to rewrite Archer's still basically unwritten character and try to make him both sensitive and ass kicker, and to me at least are failing miserably.[/random ENT pissed off moment]

5. These Trek Alien of the Week™ dudes sucked. They are tying to protect this planet so that this virus would never again leave the plt. Ummmmmm ever heard of a blockade? Or maybe even just a beacon? Even in this early Trek the universal translator works in EVERY first encounter (dare we keep something to make the plots a bit interesting.) So a beacon saying "HEY STAY THE FUCK AWAY!" was too much trouble? And then when there is a breach, it is so important to their planets security that they send 2, thats right 2 ships to deal with it? If this virus was as serious as they wanted us to think wouldn't you send a fucking armada? BTW was that the guy from First Wave?

6. Once again they missed a choice moment for some added drama. The Transporter. Its bad enough we have to have a transporter on ENT, but it works perfectly. How much better would this ep have been if a redshirt materialized in a solid environment? Trip having to decide whether risking the life of crewman outweighed that of the captain. Trip dealing with the guilt of ordering a man to what might have been/was his death. Captain Beckett talking to Trip and telling him that sometimes command decisions are difficult? Come on B&B is it really that tough? So far the only problem we have had with this BRAND SPANKING NEW piece of technology is that some redshirt materialized with some rocks in his skin.

Anyway, just my thoughts.

I couldn't be bothered to start a thread on this episode; I will let that convey my apathy over it.

While I didn't find anything particularly objectionable in it I also found little of merit.

I suppose their transporters would seem just peachy to me -- if it weren't for the niggling little fact that I happen to have watched The Menagerie (several times) and loved it.

I trust that those who had hope for this season of Boobyprise are now learning their lesson.

When Archer told Phlox not to destroy the virus, I was hoping he'd say something along the lines of, "No, save it. We may be able to use it as a biological weapon against the Xindi.", or something like that.

Bwa ha ha, check out next week's episode.
B&B are pulling out the big guns now. :P

Um, it was one episode, you know.

He didn't say it, but I'm holding this as Site's Exhibit A for evidence that many people thought it. I got this creepy feeling that it was eery foreshadowing and that all the talk about preserving a extinct species for (their) posterity was just a smoke screen. I was honestly half expecting Phlox to disregard the Captain and destroy the sample.

Other than that, it was the return of craptastic plot regeneration with a healthy dose of resetitis.

And why flamethrowers??? Sure, they look cool, but why not phasors (or some other modern weapon...
Why do they always send half (or more) of the command staff on uninvestigates planets? Why don't they scan the atmosphere first? Why did they disembark without envirosuits?
So much Questions...

Yes. One crappy, lame-ass episode. Soon to be followed by another. And another, and another, and another, and another, and another, and another... Something I am as certain of as the knowledge that the sun will rise every morning.

because they are the mani characters, we don't give two craps about the crewman of the week
Why don't they scan the atmosphere first?
quick scans were probably done off screen.

try every episode that they visited a new planet, that makes it more than "every so often"
This signaled to the audience that there was a serious threat. This helped the drama of the show and pull the audience in.
no, it just showed that redshirts don't have character shields like the command crew. and it happened too often in TOS so it became ineffective and just a cliche.

Want the short answer? Enterprise is being produced by a pair of palsied fucking half-wits whose limited creative abilities and negligible writing skills would best qualify them to write for Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. The sad fact is that these two uninspired hacks happen to have ridden exactly the right coattails to get their grubby little hands on a multimillion dollar science fiction property.

So don't be fooled, kids -- it's not Star Trek. Accept no substitute. (Anybody else getting the feeling that they need to put TOS reruns in Enterprise's slot?)

They did have a "Redshirt" die in last weeks episode.

Overall, every series has a "mediocre" episode. I honestly didn't expect much from this one.

Good point. Though still, i think it was a poorly used moment. Since this Trek has no type of body count they could use these situations for character growth. Its one thing to glance over a death on a ship with 400 or 700 people (or even 150 on Voy, including the peeps who died twice ;)). This is Earth's first real explorer and it has a crew of what 60-70?. First Warp 5 starship. And what do we get, a 10 second scene with Scott Bakula giving the fallen a stern look.

Christ, do we really have to suffer through 50+ more series just to break even?

With thier current theory of "Bring the EvoSuits after we get infected", I'm surprised they can even run their own ship

As for the flamethrowers, it's the one thing I like. No clean complete vaporization with phasers, we get nice, messy and chrispy corpses. :D

As for the other points, yeah, stupid Aliens of the Week (did the 'blockading' aliens even give out their name?? ) and a so-so episode. (And of course, more Trip/T'pol sex for the 12-year olds )

I'm starting to think the Alien Bimbos are just for B&B, considering the horrible makeup disfigurations Jeri Ryan and Jolene Blalock are subjected to. Then again, their tits are about the only things that aren't covered in ugly.

Somebody had hope for it? Were there rumors that they were going to change the name? And leave B&B beaten and whimpering out in the desert somewhere?
