Why did they switch from the warp effect in TMP and the beginning of TWOK to the blur+light trails effect at the end of TWOK through TUC? And why wasn't it used in TNG?

Because they don't know what looks good and what looks fucking stupid. I loved the WOK+ warp effect.

Easy. The TNG Enterprise needed some large distraction to hide the switch between the physical model and the computer model. So when E-D 'flashes' us, the models switch so the comp model can stretch out and go into warp.
The E-Nil used a different warp effect, one that didnt involve stretching.
I dunno why it wasnt used in TNG. Probably because Gene Roddenberry wanted to make the E-D look more advanced than the E-Nil.
But I really dont know.
And much later during Voyager and Enterprise, they were using comp models all the time, so the flash wasnt necessary. Which is a bad thing in my opinion, I loved that warp 'flash'.

Yeah, the TNG effect, if you can call it that, is very poor. I liked the effect of ST I and II better. Didn't they use this effect also in ST III and VI? Don't know exactly, if they did so.
