While Id like to hear Shatner's ideas for a new Trek series before rehashing the "Trek needs to die for a while" mantra i'm not sure That Even Kirk himself can do it, especially with BnB still at the helm and not wanting to share creative control.

Shatner actually might have an outside, one-in-a-million chance if Enterprise gets it. And his name power in the Sci-fi fandom could draw back enough viewers to give any show that he both directed in and acted in a chance, as well, if it was good enough. This assumes that B&B are outright dumped due to poor performance of Enterprise, of course; they wouldn't want to be superseded by Shatner.
Certainly Jean-Luc Picard was played as an old captain, and a series based around the adventures in the Kirk novels might be interesting; or perhaps a new concept.
Star Trek has been saved from the grave before, and perhaps Shatner can do it--but I rather doubt it. However, it's probably the only chance remaining, and will be amusing no matter what happens.

I think Shatner would and could have enough pull based on his past success, his book success (compared to Enterprise, I think his books have done better, which is really saying something), and his HUGE fan base (I know people that hate Trek, but if Shatner is in it, it's pure gold.) he could say
"Toss B&B to the curb, or I walk"
and I think Paramount might actually listen

Read the article. Star Trek V is not what Shatner had wanted. Paramount and other higher-ups kept putting restrictions and rules on Shatner to the point where Shatner compromised right out of the movie he wanted.Darth Garden Gnome wrote:Shatner directed Star Trek V. There's no way in hell I'm trusting him with a series.
There is a reason why they built shuttles just for that movie. There is a reason why they designed a phaser around combat with a clip power pack and a rather nasty sounding beam. There is even a reason why the Starfleet people were wearing proper military type uniforms in the combat. Kirk wanted an action adventure type movie and had to give it all up.

I have to wonder what sort of movie it would have been like... Damn that would have been a good movie if Shatner could have pulled it off. Good VFX, good props, good music (some of Goldsmiths best), etc... All they needed was to put the damned movie together.Lord Poe wrote:For those that don't know, the rock monster in Galaxy Quest was in Shatner's ST 5 script, as well as a number of other ideas that were cut by the studio.

Likeable? Last i heard he was a complete prick. I saw him on several shows here in the Uk and he was distainful of his fans and arrogant with the hosts. Also i heard that he bribed Roddenbury when they where filiming TOS. Apparently Roddenbury was screwing Uhura and Shatner said he'd go public with the "mixed race" affair if Roddenburry didn't meet any of Shatners demands.Darth Fanboy wrote:Plus Shatner is a likeable guy. Maybe, with his way ST:V coulda gone somewhere. I may still never fully trust him, though. Old battle scars of watching ST:V will stick to you that way; and I'm a paranoid bastard to boot. I might as well blame the destruction of my TESB:SE on him while I'm in the neighborhood.

Well Shatner is always Funny when I see himon Conan, and Futurama's ST parody was the bomb diggety. So I think he's likeable.

I have an ex-girlfriend that CLAIMS to have meet him at horse-shows and she said he was a great guy.
(No, she doesn't not claim to have slept with him or anything thing like that, just two horse-breeders/owners talking at the show)
With TV, it depends on editing of a show. Unless the UK shows were live, I wouldn't take Shatners behaviour at face value.
Also, remember, some of us can be REAL bastards if we are having problems in our life.

I know a guy who went paintballing with Shatner. He said he was actually in great shape for a guy his age, and that he was a really nice, and very funny guy. I think Shatners just a little moody and is a little tired of being cap'n Kirk, and not Shatner.

What does God need with a TV show?

Unlike BnB, Shatner actually is a decent author. He's no Great American Novelist, but for TV value, his writings are more than good enough. And as has been said, ST:V got screwed over by the producers.
And does it really matter whether or not he's a prick if he can write and direct a decent series? After all, many authors and actors are pricks, but they still turn out decent work.

At last, there is a faint ray of hope for Trek.

I red his Ashes of Eden trilogy and the following Mirror Universe Trilogy. They where not Shatners work. The Gar-Stevens's did the hard work. They put Shatners face on the books to make them sell. IMHO his solo books where piss poor. The Dark wrote:Unlike BnB, Shatner actually is a decent author. He's no Great American Novelist, but for TV value, his writings are more than good enough. Ehh, I would say just let Trek die for the next thirty years. It's clear that Berman and Braga have completely screwed over the series, and the only way they'll be pried out of their cushy top positions is if the series died and stayed dead until they were no longer in any condition to demand control. The only way the franchise could be saved at this point is if the next Trek series was absolutely perfect in every regard. And since absolute perfection is impossible, well, there you go.Darth Fanboy wrote:While Id like to hear Shatner's ideas for a new Trek series before rehashing the "Trek needs to die for a while" mantra i'm not sure That Even Kirk himself can do it, especially with BnB still at the helm and not wanting to share creative control.

I preferred his original works myself. The non-Trek ones, I mean. And some of the Gar-Stevens/Shatner works were chock-full of bad and obvious plot devices which rode to the rescue whenever the story had been written into a corner, which happened fairly often. His solo efforts, especially the later ones, were much better, since they were written morel like his actual sci-fi.Lord Pounder wrote:I red his Ashes of Eden trilogy and the following Mirror Universe Trilogy.
