On the TNG episode "Relics" Captain Scott (Scotty) is informed by the computer that there have been 4 ships to be called "Enterprise." This was before the Enterprise-E. Now, if that's TOS, A, B, C, and D, where does Bakula's ship fit into this? His ship is a starship, and it is called "Enterprise." Is this a continuity screw up?

Wouldn't TOS, A B C and D + Akiraprise equal 6 anyway?

Archer's Enterprise might not count, since it was before the UFP came into existance.

But with the Nill and A-D, that would equal five, so either way the computer messed up.

(That is, if the computer really did say "four" and not "five"...)

If the computer did say four then it's wrong. Even if it was talking about the UFP, and not Starfleet. Starfleet has had six, UFP five. Maybe they only counting the lettered ones? So the E-Nil doesn't "count"?

Yeah, that sucks. Perhaps it did say five and Superman heard something else...

Scotty did mention the 4 letters. I have relics on tape in the house i'll watch it later and let you guy know what the computer said.

Didn't we in ST:TMP see a lot of pictures in the background which allegedly represented all the ships named Enterprise which had been there before the E-A??

We didn't see the Enterprise-A until the end of TVH.

Did scotty say enterprise? or uss enterprise?

Pre-Starfleet and the federation there where earth bound sea ships called Enterprise. Remember the Nuclear Wessles incident.

Did the computer say "Four starships called Enterprise" or "Four previous starships called Enterprise"?

As for the continuity screwup, Enterprise (the series) has already screwed up continuity in such a horrible fashion it's a moot point.

Prehaps Sam's enterprise is Kirks enterprise, before a refit and removal of all good looking technology.

IMHO neither the computer or Scotty made a mistake.

No, refitted E-nil blow up in STIII, Enterprise-A just looked alike.

No. The E-nil underwent an extensive refit just before the events of ST I (I've seen this refitted Connie called the "Enterprise variant", but I don't think that's canon). She was destroyed over the Genesis Planet in ST III. The E-A was another Enterprise variant Constitution.

I'm still puzzled as to why Starfleet would upgrade their Constitution fleet only to turn around and deem them obsolete in a few scant years.

IIRC, the non-canon origin of the E-A was that it was originally the Yorktown but was renamed. (wonder how long it takes to paint the ships...)

Maybe the Excelsior project was taking longer than expected, but Starfleet didn't want to have to continue using the outdated Constitutions until the new ships were ready, so they upgraded their existing fleet to bridge the gap.

I'd estimate about 1.5 ships per series, and one ship per three movies.

Enterprise Variant is canon. It was the first established sub-class of the Consititution class. If you don't like that, then you would hate the fact that some consider it a whole new class and call it the Enterprise class.

Do we know how much time passed between I to II/III/IV to V to VI?

I don't mind that it's called that. Makes sense to me. I'm curious where it was stated in the canon that the refitted Connies are known as Enterprise variant Constitutions, though.

Enterprise class doesn't work, though, unless the Enterprise-A was built from scratch. Speaking of which, were any new Connies built during the motion picture era?

Wasn't the Ent-A just a refitted and recomissioned USS Yorktown?

Just for information's sake we see the Enterprise B (an Excelsior class IIRC) in Generations, and the E-C in Yesterday's Enterprise where Tasha Yar is resurrected and goes back in time.

As for the Akiraprise, that's just the most blatant example of B&B fucking Trek continuity up the ass.

Fleet draw-down after Khitomer. You decom the ships that are oldest first when reducing fleet size, even if you did give them SLEP--though of course any ships around which were still of similiar technology to the original Constitution-class would have gone first, but maybe Starfleet's budget was really enough to handle the whole fleet back then.
