Riker's holodeck Fetish

Post by Darth Fanboy »

In the Episode of TNG (Future Imperfect) I am currently watching, Riker has been subject to a Holdeck-ish trick.

They key to him figuring out the illusion at first was when he found video footage of his wife, a woman named Minuette(sp?) who was in reality a partof a Holodeck program riker "once experienced." When interrogated about it Riker said "she was a very special program"

Is this any indication of a holodeck, I can remember at least one previous program he needed to access after a brush withan attractive female left him "overheated"

Wow, Riker has depth. :P
It does put something of a spin on his condemnation of Barclay's holo-antics. Granted Minuette was a fictional characterisation, rather than a co-option of a crewmate's image for sex, but there's still a certain hypocrisy there.

Minuet was from the earlier episode "11010101" (or something else in binary). The Bynars upgraded the ship and created Minuet as a girl in Riker's jazz club to distract him. He was fascinated that she could hold a conversation with him. Go figure.

IIRC, it was because characters in holoprogrammes had a rather limited intelligence and interactivity before then. They weren't that good at spontineity.

Minuette was the first such advanced programme that Riker encountered and was so for a while, I think.

Minuette was custom programmed to react to Riker and adjust her personality to match his desires perfectly. She was good enough to make him forget, or disregard, that she didn't really exist.

It doesn't take depth of character to want nookie.

It's not hypocritical. Barclay was making holograms of actual crewmembers for his little fantasies; that's different.

Besides, IIRC he was disciplined partly because his holodeck antics were preventing him from reporting for duty on schedule. What Riker does on his own time is less of an issue.

Oh, no. But IMO Riker was such a colourless character that anything, even something really tenuous and ill-defined like this, would give him a bit of extra pep.

I think I overstated things.
What I was thinking was: If the script for Hollow Pursuits (sp?) had made just a passing reference to the fact that Riker himself had been taken in by a holodeck character.... that would have been okay.
