Enterprise's new "soldiers" in the 3rd season.

I was reading this article and came across this:
The Enterprise crew will be joined by new characters, members of Military Assault Command Operations, or MACO. "They're kind of semi-recurring and will be used on certain away missions," Braga said. Those characters have yet to be cast.
Here's the link

It's been posted before that there will be soldiers on board but this is the first mention of their organization's name.

There are some other details about the 3rd season in that article. Nothing that really impresses me. Of course I wonder in addition to all these changes if B&B thought to fix the real problem: the shitty writing.

I'm sure they'll butcher the idea of a SpecOps team just as badly as everything else they do.

Special Ops teams with a heart, perhaps?

or the line

"We're scientists before we're soldiers." is BOUND to crop up.

Maybe they'll have grenades; that would be cool. Or maybe BODY ARMOR. You know, instead of navy blue pajamas.

More likely they'll be wearing some kind of flexible leather-like shoulder pads. They'll all carry big knives, which they'll sharpen all the time in order to show how tough they are. And of course, they'll be violent, boorish thugs who keep getting in fights. Naturally, they will exclusively use actors who are large and muscular, because modern soldiering is all about brute physical strength rather than tactics. They will live for combat.

Wait a minute, that sounds familiar. Oh yeah, they'll be human versions of Klingons.

Just wait and see ...

LOL. Leather like shoulder pads over their blue pyjamas are a must. Helmets are out- too sensible. They'll make fancy military type hand signals in the first episode, but will forget them later on.

That seems disturbingly likely.

You think Paramount would hire me to be one of those soldiers? I can sharpen a knife...

Don't forget at least once an episode, someones going to have a problem with killing their enemies, like how Picard did with his chance to wipe out the borg.

Wait a minute! How did SG-1 end up in the Trek Universe?

Really, I wouldn't be surprised in Enterprise started ripping off episodes, they already have the means of transportation, now all they need is a Jaffa.

It will be interesting to see how they portray human soldiers, but I feel the board is correct they will quickly fall into a typical B&B pattern.

Dont forget they will be adept at rolling across the deck then firing their weapons.

They will also trained in "large motion" martial arts and nearly worthless at shooting.

Anyone remember TOS where occasionally we would see Enterprise officers engaging in Martial arts training? Charlie X comes to mind where Kirk was teaching Charlie basic martial arts. TNG officers? Picard RIDES FUCKING HORSES in his spare time.

They certainly castrated the officer corps between TOS and TNG

Awesome! I loved MACO as the wizard in Conan the Barbarian!

Oh. Never mind...

That's just your irrational hatred of B&B's ST showing again. Just look at the stirring battles The Siege of AR-90210 or The Way of the Warrior or...

Aw, Shit.

Not to mention screaming and charging people with guns as if military tactics hadn't moved forward since the fucking Zulu War.

I'm actually looking forward to this. It will be fascinating to see how they fuck up this idea.

MACO, Military Assault Command Operations
Oh, I get it. Like the shark, right? (Yes, I know it's m-a-k-o.)

My first thought was, why not Tactical Assault Command Ops? Then, everytime Captain Archer asks for the Tac unit, Porthos barks - which is then followed by a 1950's style collective grin and shaking of heads from the bridge crew.

What do you mean it's not a comedy?

Considering that British soldiers in the Zulu wars understood the value of firing in volleys to intimidate their enemies and preferred not to fight HTH, you're being too generous.

Federation Soldiers fight like... hmm... They basically crouch behind cover and squeeze off poorly aimed shots. So I'd say if you took Viet Cong, equipped them only with bolt action rifles, removed all concept of camoflauge and traps and allowed only the most basic tactics, you'd get a good approximation of feddies.

Klingon soldiers fight like... well, no military force I've ever heard of. I suppose street gangs would be a good approximation (fire inaccurately with pistols and attempt to duke it out with knives and fists).

No, they'll have helmets, however the props department with base them off of those of Russian tank crews, ignorant of the fact that those are not meant to stop fragments or bullets.

That might not be an idea totally without merit if they operate solely on spaceships and in buildings. You don't want to bash your head during an entry, after all.

B&B will equip their soldiers with berets for head protection. They will even wear them into battle. They will wear standard starfleet uniforms, except with leather bits over the shoulders and possibly a belt for holding things.

I don't think the Russians even refer to them as helmets :)

No, I've got it!

Starfleet troops will wear Budenny helmets.

The "Military Assault Command Operations" sounds a bit non-sensical to me.

It's almost as if B&B were more concerned with how the name will look as an acronym as opposed to actually making sense as a name for a special operations or security force.

But it could be worse. They could have been called "Marines". We would have to associate that name, which normally brings to mind the thought of competent, dedicated soldiers, applying liberal amounts of boot to ass, with the B&B tradition of totally absurd ground combat.

You're forgetting Nemesis. Stand in the middle of a corribor, fire shots at somebody 10 feet away, and miss, repeatedly. Then stand back to admire the pretty sparks phasers make.
