Interesting Note that I might as well bring up here on the subject of the Prophets: Berman and Piller originally had no intention of going back to the Wormhole-aliens after Emissary. Behr, when he took over the writing staff, had other ideas and that led into their larger prominece in the series.Bellator wrote:I wasn't talking about the Prophets blurring the lines, but the Writers.

From certain points of view, a Ferengi revamp was necessary. After all, they had originally been envisioned as the Klingons of TNG and that backfired when The Last Outpost made them look like angry gerbils (ironically, of course, their failure led to the creation of the Borg).Stofsk wrote:Behr sucks. Wasn't he also the fucknuckle who made teh Ferengi deliberate pansies, one-trick ponies completely obsessed over the acquisition of wealth and so on? Good job.

That having been said, yeah, despite some good episodes, the Ferengi pursuit of fortune and greed did get overdone in many instances.
Should be interesting when the 3rd Worlds of Deep Space Nine book is published next year; Ferenginar will be one of the two world examined and we'll get a better look then in the previous reluanch novels at how Rom's handling the reins of Ferengi civilzation.

Berman was doing something good for a change?JME2 wrote:Interesting Note that I might as well bring up here on the subject of the Prophets: Berman and Piller originally had no intention of going back to the Wormhole-aliens after Emissary. Seriously, the wormhole aliens went from, "Wow, linear existance? What a thought! Tell us more, Sisko dude!" to "Sisko is the chosen one, your path is difficult"...ooookkkaaaay....

True, to an extent. Regardless of what the Ferengi looked like, they were presented as a viable threat. The Marauder was a match for the GCS (at least, that is what we were led to believe), and while looking like angril gerbils the ferengi were nevertheless small and agile.JME2 wrote:From certain points of view, a Ferengi revamp was necessary. Indeed. In a galaxy teeming with belligerent Klingons and Nausicaans, scheming Romulans and Cardassians, insidious Federation (8)), relentless Borg, and shadowy Dominion, you'd think they'd have a strong defence force, but they don't appear to have a hardened, mercenary army. They're capitalists too, so you'd think they'd have the money to buy the best equipment and training.JME2 wrote:That having been said, yeah, despite some good episodes, the Ferengi pursuit of fortune and greed did get overdone in many instances.
He's probably turned Ferenginar into a Socialist's paradise; he must have plenty of inspiration with the Federation neighbours.Should be interesting when the 3rd Worlds of Deep Space Nine book is published next year; Ferenginar will be one of the two world examined and we'll get a better look then in the previous reluanch novels at how Rom's handling the reins of Ferengi civilzation.

The optimist thinks, that we live in the best of all possible worlds and the pessimist is afraid, that this is true.

Why not? A socialist state IS paradise, provided you are at the top of it and can exploit the system. No capitalist profitmargin can match socialist corruption...FTeik wrote:I would think, that his mother wouldn´t allow that.
Also didn't he steal a minor fortune from The Grand Nagus while running his charity?

Here's the basic synopsis for the tale:FTeik wrote:I would think, that his mother wouldn´t allow that.Stofsk wrote:He's probably turned Ferenginar into a Socialist's paradise; he must have plenty of inspiration with the Federation neighbours.Should be interesting when the 3rd Worlds of Deep Space Nine book is published next year; Ferenginar will be one of the two world examined and we'll get a better look then in the previous reluanch novels at how Rom's handling the reins of Ferengi civilzation.
Within every federation and every empire, behind every hero and every villain, there are the worlds that define them. In the aftermath of Unity and in the daring tradition of Spock's World, The Final Reflection, and A Stitch in Time, the civilizations most closely tied to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine can be experienced as never before... in tales both sweeping and intimate, reflective and prophetic, eerily familiar and utterly alien...
Ferenginar: "Satisfaction is Not Guaranteed", written by Keith R.A. DeCandido
Quark's profit-driven homeworld is beset with scandal as shocking allegations involving his brother's first wife, the mother of Nog, threaten to overthrow Rom as Grand Nagus of the Ferengi Alliance. Making matters worse, Quark has been recruited by Rom's political adversaries to join their coup d'état, with guarantees of all Quark ever dreamed if they succeed in taking his brother down. While Ferenginar's future teeters on the edge, the pregnancy of Rom's current wife, Leeta, takes a difficult turn for mother and child both.
