Any two organisms that can produce fertile offspring are, by definition, members of the same species.

Star Trek has butchered more than just physics my friend.

Interestingly, the Federation didn't seem to know wha they were when they joined, otherwise Crusher wouldn't have been so surprised to find out.
The Trill make it clear that they do not like outsiders to meddle in their affairs, as shown in the apparent symbiot/parasite (from TNG's 'conspiracy') connection that's been a major subplot of the DS9 relaunch novels thus far.

I'm usually not a big "Suspension of Disbelief above all else!" guy, but I'll make an exception in this case. Star Trek humanoids are all variations of the same species, and either the definition of species has changed in the 24th century or they're all morons.

I exclude TOS Trek because...well, because it doesn't suck. Besides, we've only got one half-human alien to deal with there, who happens to look exactly like a full-blooded Vulcan. Spock's human "mother" could have been a stepmother or adopted mother or something.

Alot of the productions aspects of TOS are hard to rationalize anyway. Like their uniforms. It doesn't exactly make sense that in the 23rd century, military organizations would have their uniforms be off the rack sweaters with all markings consisting of gold tape stuck to said uniform and all clothing just happening to correspond with clothing you can just so happen buy in stores in the 1960s with light modifications. Or that when ever Kirk gets into a fight during said fight he turns into a thinner man with a different haircut any time he makes an physical feat.

TOS really can't be put under such strict rules when it comes down to it.

Actually, the uniforms were custom made by the cosume department. They look off the rack partly because Roddenberry didn't want them to look like military uniforms, and partly because they didn't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of, so cheap fabric and simple cuts were the rule.

But unless 24th century humans can morph their haircut whenever they take a punch, yeah, not all of TOS can be rationalized. :D

Actually, all of the costumes were made by the production, even the ones that looked like contemporary clothing.

I always figured that the aliens that seeded the galaxy were checking up rom time to time, to see how their kids developed. They kept the DNA alike for the primary races, and encouraged their favorite DNA to grow.

Thus, the primary races grew up with humanoid DNA, that was compatible.

I know, a (very) long stretch.

Well considering Dax's and The trill's past, they were probably part of the Klingon Empire Originally, thus explaining why the Federation knew very little about them, and why the "Famous Trill Ambasadore" had such a great influence in Klingon History.
