There's also the first Rurouni Kenshin OVA series (I haven't seen the second).
It's not the most depressing ever, and it's not disturbing at all. But it is an enormously powerful emotional experience; I found myself crying more than a few times during the series, and it affected me pretty heavily.

I love how it drops that bomb on you. The whole series, the loyalty of the Band of the Hawk is nothing less than absolute, and it ends in betrayal. It's actually kind of a nihilistic ending.Sam Or I wrote:What about Berserk?
