Say, how come Phlox doesn't (and never did) have a uniform?
Or do those heavy fabrics he's wearing pass off as a futuristic version of medical scrubs...

I believe in a sign of Zeta.

IIRC, isn't he a civilian doctor that was on an exchange program to Earth, and thus not actually part of Starfleet?Montcalm wrote:I think its cause T-Pol and him arent human, and its pre-federation,so they don`t need to wear the uniform.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Say, how come Phlox doesn't (and never did) have a uniform?

Which, now that I think about it, seems a little odd: his expertise notwithstanding, wouldn't regulations require them to have a Starfleet doctor as chief medical officer, with Phlox acting as a civilian consultant? I mean, aside from not wanting to be booted off at the next port of call, what keeps him following Starfleet regulations... or worse, deciding he's had enough of life on the NX-01 and just jumping ship at the next port, leaving them high and dry without a doctor?

No worries. Chances are that the Starfleet Medical People weren't as experienced as Phlox, and knowing all the wierd stuff that goes on out there, practicallity won over protocol.greenmm wrote:IIRC, isn't he a civilian doctor that was on an exchange program to Earth, and thus not actually part of Starfleet?Montcalm wrote:I think its cause T-Pol and him arent human, and its pre-federation,so they don`t need to wear the uniform.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Say, how come Phlox doesn't (and never did) have a uniform?

Also, if your doctor is a little eccentric, it doesn't matter as long as you're fixed up in the end. I've always suspected that the medics always got away with more than most ...

I don't see how Phlox could be more experienced than a human doctor when it comes to dealing with the maladies or potential injuries inflicted upon a human crew. The only one on board Phlox would be more qualified to treat than a human doctor would be T'Pol... this is speaking on the basis of a long-term posting. Phlox's initial choice by Archer made perfect sense -- Phlox was the attending physician for the Klingon who crashed at Broken Bow, so it only made sense to bring Phlox on the trip to Q'onos. Still, there is no reason at all why Phlox shouldn't have been removed from the ship's roster when they went back to Earth.

Actually in case they meet other species, Phlox, who species' has presumably had more experience with other species would still be useful.Raoul Duke, Jr. wrote:I don't see how Phlox could be more experienced than a human doctor when it comes to dealing with the maladies or potential injuries inflicted upon a human crew. For the human crew however, they should probably have gotten a doctor that specializes more with humans when they went back to Earth.

Since they are supposed to be so far away from help why don't they have at least two medical personel? Even if they only have one doctor they could have a PA, a Nurse Practicioner, a Nurse, or even a PCT. Flox seems to be doing an awful lot of things on his own. Shouldn't he have some back up?
