Oops, I mean Lucas will probably used the rejected concept art in Eps 3, but in the movie, will it be designated as "Victory-Class Star Destroyer"? The name "Victory" comes from EU, you know....
Actually, the Incredible Cross-Section for the original trilogy DOES mention Victory-class star destroyers..... at least the danish version does...

Supposedly Dreadnaughts were pre-clone wars, and were mainly tied to systems for defence. There was no REpublic Army, but there was the Judicial Department according to The Approaching Storm which used correlian lancet starfighters. There would have had to have been SOME ships for protection, just not a whole lot. Vics were supposed to be introduced during the clone wars going by EU, and ISDs several years prior to ANH. I doubt, however, that we will see either.

I think it would be cool to see SDs in Episode III, but knowing how GL enjoys fucking with continuity even from the first 3 films, we'll probly see a fully completed DS that blows up tatoonie, hoth, yavin, and every other planet in Eps. IV-VI. Bastard.

It's most probable we will see Dreadnaughts as one of the more prominent capital ships in the Clone Wars. Remember the Katana Fleet? Wasn't the Katana Fleet from around the time of the Clone Wars, or lost around that time? (I need to check the books for sure)
The Acclamator-class Military Transports look very close to what the Victory and Imperator Class Star Destroyers look like. It seems to be GL is obviously showing us a pre-cursor to the real battleships.
A lot of you have pointed out the Republic had no military. Very true. Remember that then Chancellor Palpatine ordered the creation of a Grand Army of the Republic. If you don't have a military, your naval forces would obviously be small as well. For if you don't have a military, you must see little reason in a navy. We will probably see a stock-piling of forces build up and wage and all out war in space.
Remember in A New Hope Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi refers to Anakin Skywalker as "...an excellent pilot..." This could be showing that Anakin uses his force skills in space piloting instead of military battles as in AOTC. This would be entirely possible especially after we see Anakin and Padme married at the end of AOTC. It's possible that Anakin will be expelled from the Jedi Order for breaking the Jedi Code. This would show that possibly space battles will take a prominent role in Episode III.

Recall that at least the AOTC ICS suggests that the larger worlds have significant militias, but there is no Republic-wide military. Continuity could be preserved somewhat by having Dreadnaughts be converted local defence craft.

Perhaps there was a Dreadnaught in Return of the Jedi

Not possible USAF Ace, it looks awfully like Home One. I highly doubt this was a Dreadnaught. I don't believe the Alliance built the Dreadnaught's for a couple of reasons. First off, they took an enormous amount of resources to build. They were not very consumer friendly in a matter of speaking. Second of all, the Alliance was only able to throw together a rag-tag fleet of former Star Cruisers and blockade runners and their medical frigates, the Nebulon-B's. It's unlikely the Alliance had many Dreadnaughts, although they probably had a few do to their piracy actions.
When you look at both ships from a distance they look an awfully lot alike, but I can guarantee you that is not a Dreadnaught. It is either Home One or a Mon Calamaria MC80a Star Cruiser. Most likely it is Home One, this is based on how far the bridge extends off of the main hull. A Dreadnaughts bridge is not noticeable, it doesn't extend up off of the hull. Also, a Dreadnaught is only 600 meters in length, this ship looks much bigger. It looks to be about 3,000 meters in length.

Yeah, it's probably not a Dreadnaught, considering that the Dreadnaught was thought up after ROTJ. However, it is not one of the three mon cal cruiser types seen in the battle. None of the cruisers have the bulge in the front or back like this ship has. It is almost certainly a half finished or concept model that was thrown in the background for kicks.
Here's another mysterious ship from ROTJ. It's at the bottom, directly under the Death Star.

I can almost guarantee you the first ship you pointed out was Home One. Here is a picture of Home One, compare it to your picture.

Whmmm...... although the bridge does come up off the hull it's not as much as the picture I've seen. Interesting though. I would still assume it is some type of Mon Calamari Star Cruiser. Remember that all Mon Cal's are a little bit different and very complex, so it's possible it's just a thrown together Mon Cal design.

It's probably a fourth Calamari Cruiser we've never seen before, except for that one scene. Rumor is that toward the end of shooting ROTJ, the special effects budget was running short, leaving several models uncompleted. These two mystery ships are probably the most finished of the lot, and were thrown in as background filler. I wish ILM would release some photos of these. We have enough shitty EU ships, let's see some more cannon ones.

So what is your definition of cannon? My definition was everything in the expanded universe except that Lucas' word and creations could override some EU material.

Canon includes the screenplays, the films, the radio dramas, and the novelisations. All canon is official.
The EU is official, but not canon. It is refered to as apocryphal. Apocryphal is anything official, but not canon.
The Dreadnaught, VSD, Corellian Gunship, etc are apocryphal. The two ROTJ mystery ships are canon. That is why I wish ILM would release photos of them.

So what then is the difference between canon and "official?" Does official simply mean it can be overwriten by canon? And why do you call it apochraphyl?

Sorry, you don't get to decide.
