I believe Berman has specifically stated that he has not watched TOS and does not like it. He has said that he does not care about anything established in TOS because he does not want to be tied down "creatively".

And here we have the prime example of why Trek has gone downhill continuity wise. Instead of stretching your creative muscle to make your new works fit in with the previously established universe, you ignore them because it would limit your creativity.

Must have been the same excuse they used for every individual epp of Voyager to. Never mind what went before earlier on in the series, it will only limit your creativity afterall. ... I'm gonna be sick...

This just in....B&B who were handed the reigns of Star Wars franchise after GL's death stated that they have not seen the Original Trilolgy for fear of being constrained creatively. The new Movie Star Wars: The Jedi End Game First Contact opens Friday.

I disagree vigorously. Ensign ("Lieutenant" before a black man was cast) Travis Mayweather is the token black man on Enterprise. As such, the white-bread producers and writers don't understand how to write for such a character. This, obviously, wasn't much of an issue with Uhura, Geordi, Sisko or with Tuvok. (Even though Uhura being not only black but a black woman who plays a recurring character in a prime-time drama was a big issue for its day, the fact that Uhura was black was a significant non-issue to the show, the cast or the writers.)

I see I erred. "Cowpie" is meant to describe Trippy (that I confused him for Travis shows how little I actually watch this trainwreck of a show). Given how the writers seem unable to figure out any function for Travis, the word which best describes him would be "Doorstop".

Either that, or Crewman n.6.

You could be right. I am so used to seeing B&B, it is hard to keep them straight. I know one of them in at least one interview (probably many more) expressed outright contempt for TOS.

MoO challenged us to define his personality, not his role in the show. His personality is unquestionably that of a sort of "hick". He is defined by his youth growing up on slow interstellar freighters, and nothing has been added to his character except a tendency to get into accidents that result in minor injuries.

I lasted longer on the show than you did, apparently. I can actually pinpoint the second, though, when I realized it wasn't going to get better. Remember in "Shockwave" when they go through the whole frickin' subplot where Hoshi has to crawl through the spacious ventilation duct because she's the smallest one? The whole time I was watching this I was wondering why the writers were going through so many hoops to make sure that Hoshi's the only one that can do it. I eventually decided that they were trying to make her seem even less secure, but overcome her fears, and decided that was horrible writing. Then she ripped off her shirt. And then it hit me. The show's making no effort to get better. I switched channels and started watching ESPN. That was the end of ENT, for me.
