Figures SW lost SFX Award. The Academy hates GL for some damned reason. Just jumping on the "we hate the Prequels!" bandwagon I guess.

Kind of reminds me when The Matrix beat TPM, not once but TWICE.

I'm guessing it went to TTT.

Yep, it went to TTT. Hardly surprising, really, considering Hollywood's sentiment at the moment.

They were both impressive. But TTT did have a political edge.

Core Ship crash > TTT. There's no getting around that one, folks. Don't get me wrong, TTT kicked ass, and had great effects. But AOTC has a lead of about a mile or so regardless.

The AoTC crew had to create worlds. What they did was much more impressive than what the TTT crew did.

Lucas openly rebuked Hollywood shortly before The Phantom Menace came out. He said he dissapproved of the way that they made movies, saying that it was more poltics then artistic vision.

Basically he didnt like big studio execs and suits telling directors what to do.

Since then, Hollywood has considered him to be an outcast or outsider. He turned his back on Hollywood, so Hollywood turns his back on him.

Thats the source of all the Anti-Star Wars hatred. Thats why TPM didnt win anything, and thats why AOTC didnt win anything. Im also willing to bet that Episode III wont win anything either.

In order to win Academy Awards, you have to be a team player...

Well, Christopher Lee, Samuel L. Jackson and Ewan McGregor were bigger names than him. But didn't they give somene in TPM an award for "Worst Supporting Actress" when she didn't even have any lines?

Sofia Coppola was nominated for "Worst Supporting Actress" for her role in The Phantom Menace. She played one of the Hand-Maidens.

The Razzies really have it in for her, she won "Worst New Star', and "Worst Supporting Actress" for her role in Godfather Part III. She was also nominated for "Worst New Star of the Decade."

Wonder what she did to piss them off so much???

They're probably pissed off at someone related to here, like http://us.imdb.com/Name?Cage,+Nicolas Nicholas Cage, http://us.imdb.com/Name?Coppola,%20Francis%20Ford Francis Ford Copolla, or maybe they just didn't like the Godfather Trilogy and will hate anyone remotely related to it's production.

The Oscars in recent years have been much better about rewarding movies that, as Steve Martin said, "everybody likes, and went to see." Simply, from a storytelling and technological perspective, Gollum was an amazing creation.

TTT was just plain a better film than AOTC was.

The award is for SFX.

What the ILM team did for Attack of the Clones anally raped Gollum in TTT.

Period.

Yeah.

One word: Kamino.

Another word: Geonosis.

How many times in AOTC did we see CG elements integrated seamlessly with a real environment? The real beauty of the LotR CG is that most of the time, you don't even know it's there - Gollum is just the tip of the iceberg (because even though he looks quite real, you know that he has to be CGI simply because no human actor looks THAT emaciated and pathetic). All too often, the CGI creatures in Star Wars have a serious "Look! I'm CG!" quality to them (even Yoda suffers from this to a degree).

Star Wars had somewhat more ambitious CGI VFX, but LOTR integrated them better into the film.

Still, the human production line from Hell is an effective and somewhat creepy scene.

You're right, sometimes the CGI really stood out. Other times you couldn't even tell that the actors were only in a blue studio.

Coruscant, IIRC, is probably the best example. Not Geonosis.

Agreed. There are some scenes on Geonosis that really look terrible, especially the ones where Obi-Wan is standing by himself, and you can see the fuzzy outline around him where he was bluescreened.
