I always wondered why they called it voyager, till 7 of 9 came along and the voyur part just explained itself.

Isn't the Intrepid-class some sort of scout frigate??

I don't like Voyager's design... reminds me of an inverted toilet bowl. :P

I believe she's classed as a light explorer/scout

The Intrepid class is a frigate not a cruiser and certainly not a destroyer. This class of ships has a maximum complement of only 38 photon torpedoes while the sovergeign class is capable firing 20 torpedoes a second. Clearly in any prolonged fleet engagement Intrepids would be the first ships to run out of torpedoes. However each of their photon torpedo launchers can fire two torpedoes each second. So in a battle the Intrepids will make quick strafing runs emptying their torpedoes and following up with phaser fire. They do seem to have good phaser firepower as Voyger was often able to destroy ships using the phasers only.

Intrepids seem to have weak shields. In "Equinex" a survey ship with very weak phasers and just one torpedo launcher was able to seriously damage voyger. So Intrepids will probobly need to make the most of their agility to survive in combat

Since Intrepids have excellent warp speeds and sensor capability they are good scouts. The could operate in deep space for years without any resupply as Voyger showed. So in the end Intrepids would be a moderately shielded frigate performing picket duties for the star fleet.

So where did they get the rest of the torpedoes they fired in the show?

The same places they stored 17 spare Shuttlecraft.

*nitpick* Voyager can go to warp without "folding" her nacelles, but to reduce the subspace pollution while at warp the nacelles must be "folded" *end nitpick*
Wait a second, "Subspace pollution"? What? Ok forgive me for not understanding the concept but WTF is susbpace pollution?

one of TNG eps , I forget its name, but in anycase in this ep, a rogue scientist proved that consent use of warp engines in an area of space, can cause the barrier between subspace and real space to break down, causing rifts to develop. since then all new star ships have been designed to limit this from happening.

Maybe they got them from other Delta Quadrant civilizations which also used photon torpedoes..... although this is quite a bad explanation, as there's no reason to assume that Delta Quadrant torpedoes could be launched by an Alpha Quadrant starship.

One good thing about the design of Voyager (and the E-E): at least they got rid of the stupid neck between engineering and the saucer.

The nacelles, pylons, and necks on all ST ships always seemed to me like you could reach out and snap them off very easily.
