It would help if more of their jokes were actually funny and not written for TVtrope's own in-crowd.Darth Yan wrote:I'll admit it's not a serious site. I think I'd rather use Encyclopedia Dramatica for a resource than TVTropes. ED is at least funny at times.Formless wrote:There are franchises I happen to like that few other websites even talk about. To be honest I only really started watching his stuff after he started out with the Distressed Watcher thing and therefore totally overlooked his earlier videos and his supposedly libertarian viewpoints. Could be that I've seen some of it back then but it didn't really spark any interest.

You could use the search function, but because you are somehow unable to do so :

Thus ends my bit of this pointless tangent. As an aside, the web has given me a few chuckles, but nothing that compares to Carlin or even Seinfeld.

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal Theatre is usually pretty reliable too.

@ Hamstray: Eh, maybe he toned it down. The big one that turned me off to his politics was his notion that taxes could be optional and that we'd just deny people who don't want to pay them vital services... as if this were practical. I did say that he hates the right, so maybe this is a reaction to it. That's not to say that there aren't libertarians who aren't opposed to the right-- I've met a few that were annoying as well. And its not as if I find him annoying solely for that reason-- Chuck has stated that he identifies as a libertarian (perhaps only for convenience, though) but he still manages to be thoughtful even when touching on what he knows to be unavoidably political subjects.

Really? I also find it kind of cool that it actually gained a fanbase there, since it means the story does have appeal to others; hell they even made a cmoa page; as geeky as it is, it is touching that they like the series that much.

Re: Who are your 5 favorite web comedians
Nostalgia Critic was funny at the start but over time he's become less and less funny and more and more grating to watch. I don't watch any of his shit anymore. When he tries to be "angry", it's really bad, forced acting. For somebody who hates on bad acting a lot, he sure is fucking horrible himself. Any time he does a "funny" parody or something where he pretends to call himself as someone else, it's painful to watch. It's not so bad it's good, it's so bad it's terrible.Darth Yan wrote:What are your 5 favorite web comedians?
1.) Nostalgia Critic (This guy is literally the god of web comedy.)
...
4.) Linkara: Great style, very funny, lots of effects that are good, and quite insightful as well.
Linkara is more bearable but I don't like his voice 99% of the time, especially when he goes on some feminist or libertarian rant or something in the middle of one of his videos. Any time I see him start I just close the window and do something else with my time.
But as for myself:
1. sfdebris
2. The Spoony One
3. Angry Video Game Nerd
4. Maddox
5. Red Letter Media
Chuck takes the #1 spot because he's consistently well written, raises good points and has solid comedic timing. His voice is perfectly tolerable, and he puts just enough snark into it where it's amusing without being totally one-note and repetitive. He gives credit where it's due instead of the kind of mindless, one sided hating you see many reviewers fall into when they try to be funny. I don't and probably will never watch any of the Trek series, but I enjoy watching his videos every Sunday.
Noah is my second pick for similar reasons, although he tends to falter a lot more than Chuck does. Some videos just seem to drag on forever, and it falls into some of the traps that Nostalgia Critic et al. fall into consistently with the unfunny acting segments cut into the reviews. Although ULTIMATE WARRIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH and most of his other creations are complete and total comedic abortions, Dr Insano has this weird appeal that I can't really describe properly, and I do find him much more watchable and sometimes even amusing. I love a bit of snark in my day, and Spoony has quite a few videos that are solid gold. The other great thing is that he has a huge back-catalog and his videos tend to be very long, so generally speaking there's always something to watch if you want more of him, and you never get the situation where you're waiting a month for a new video and then it's 6 minutes long or something. Also, the theme song is pretty catchy.
James Rolfe as the AVGN is usually pretty fun to watch. Unlike most people who try to be "angry", he's actually amusing when he shouts and its almost believable. As with Chuck, his ability to recognize good parts of otherwise shitty games keeps it from feeling too one sided, along with the fact that he doesn't always review shitty games - he's done a few classics as well and praised them appropriately. I haven't seen his whole archive unlike the first two on my list, so I still go back and discover new videos from time to time.
Oh, George. Why don't you ever update? When I first stumbled upon Maddox in like 07, there was a huge back-catalogue to binge through. I powered through it all in a few weeks, then patiently waited for the next update. I waited for a LONG time. The quality of his articles are usually excellent, with lots of good laughs to be had. Would rank higher on the list except for two things; the aforementioned lack of content, and the absolutely abysmally unfunny live action show that he's been putting out recently. His delivery is fucking piss poor, the editing isn't that great and the writing isn't his usual high quality. Ungh.
RLM gets a mention and my number 5 pick. He stuffs up a lot, but even when I know he's wrong about something he's usually amusing enough that I just don't give a fuck. He's a fantastic internet troll so I have to give him props for that, too. I really don't like the ongoing saga with the kidnapped hooker though, it's just not that funny and distracts from the actually good things in his reviews. People give him a loooot of shit for the voice, but it's very much a love-it-or-hate-it affair. I find it easily tollerable, even where I find someone like Linkara or Nostalgia Critic to be fucking irritating as shit.
Honorable Mentions:
- The Giant Bomb crew
- The Agony Booth.
- The entire of NeoGAF. So many priceless gifs.

the fact that he was able to interview the animaniacs cast was pretty god damn cool, and roger ebert calling his tribute to siskel and ebert the best one is also kind of cool. His North Review is funny as well, since it points out major flaws in the story (the eskimo segment was very insightful.) but every man has his own opinions

Re: Who are your 5 favorite web comedians
There's something that's been bothering me lately. You see, with the exception of the Loading Ready Run guys, Ed Glaser, and maybe Transilvania TV, all of these web comedians depend on someone else's work to make their own stuff. They don't create their own original material, just rant, criticize, expose or comment on other people's stuff.
Now, don't get me wrong, I like what they do, and many of them actually do a great job of exposing obscure or half-forgotten materials (like Ed Glaser's Deja View segment) to a wider audience, but I keep wondering what some of them will do when they run out of stuff to rant about. Consider how the NC seems to be scrapping the bottom of the barrel lately.

RLM and Yahtzee for guys that appeared strictly within the media of interweb.
RLM has been ranted over before so I don't wish to rehash that. Broadly, his criticisms are good to watch, and his sense of humour is gross and unpleasant. Yahtzee's got the good interplay of immaturity and criticism down too.
Richard Herring and Joe Cornish for guys that use the internet while having some TV/radio media experience ahead of time.
