The UK and France DID try to play the Nazis and the Commies against each other, as noted in Stupid Wars, which claims as Finns prepared to negotiate an end to the Winter War, France offered huge amounts of materiel aid to Finland IF THEY CONTINUED FIGHTING, i.e., continued eroding Soviet military strength; the Finns, understanding this would've eroded their own strength at a greater rate, rejected the offer.

No one ever suggested the UK and France were somehow blameless and didn't try to double-play the Reich-USSR conflict to their ends. Merely that this has no relation to the ability of the USSR to nuke Germany during WWII, since it had no nuclear weapons.
