It was "Chimera", in the 7th season. Laas was definitely one of Odo's species, as they linked. He wasn't a Founder, though, just one of the 100 baby changelings sent out to explore the galaxy like Odo.

As to why the rest don't pull these tricks, well... the story-external explanation is that they hadn't been thought of yet. A possible story-internal explanation is that the Founders were infected with the changeling plague since "Broken Link" in the end of the 4th season and had their powers hampered.
And to think a bunch of Klingons easily killed the shapeshifter that was posing as General Martok. To hear you talk, a shapeshifter is near-godlike
Laas was. Anything that can turn into fire, a cloud of vapor or go warp under its own power should fit under "near god-like". Of course other changelings didn't use these powers onscreen, and Odo is particularly bad at shape-shifting. Nevertheless, he should be able to easily overpower Data. False Ambassador Krajensky, when discovered, rippled outward and knocked over everyone on the bridge of the Defiant, then lept through an exit in the ceiling at superhuman speed. Near-human Data won't have a chance.

Founders formed the dominion so they wouldn't have to get their hands dirty when protecting their own species and destroying others. they don't use those tricks because they don't particularly want to.

I think Mike may have meant, "Why didn't the Founder who got shot to death by the Klingons just disappear in a puff of smoke?" To which there are many possible answers, not least being that the Founder wasn't very smart (possibly the result of mimicking a Klingon for so long).

To be fair, I'm not sure I'd call that "easy". Practically every disruptor pistol in the room was shooting at the shapeshifter, and he still stood up to it for a few seconds. Subjectively, I'd expect a shapeshifter to survive a shot from a phaser that wasn't cranked all the way up to max.

and yet one shot from a Cardassian Disruptor (could have been Bajoran) exploded Odo, while the regular Founders have some nifty abilities this thread involves Odo who is rather limited compared to others of his species.

In reference to Odo becoming more massive: the first time we see the shapeshifter Laas, he is actually some kind of organic starship AT WARP. Laas also changes into a cloud of fog on the entire Promenade, kills a Klingon by extending a blade-arm through his heart a la T-1000, and turns into fire.
Is this "Laas" shapeshifter one of Odo's species? Why don't the rest of them pull these kinds of tricks? I never saw this episode.
IIRC, yes he is, but he's a rogue. I could be wrong. However, the ability to turn into a gas cloud should not be assumed to mean an increase in mass as gas is much more difuse than liquid. Don't remember anything about him when he was a starship.

He was one of the 100 changelings sent out by the founders to find out about other races (like Odo).
He had been alive for 200 years (or it would be more accurate to say he had been self aware for that amount of time).

He also had an ability to sense Odo in his starship form and he then entered the Runabout somehow.

But remember no force in the galaxy can possibly stand up to a bunch of fuzzy leather clad barbarians.....

I thought Odo didn't like using hand weapons?

Today I watched the DS9 episode "The assignment" in which

: Odo is knocked out by "1" punch by cheif O'brien to the face.

The Shapeshifter in "Chimera" could turn into a warp capable starship as well as fire, and other things so I would say that Odo is especially retarded in terms of shape-shifting ability and durability.

And that would have some bearing if Odo wasn't a human at the time (or he had be robbed of his changeling powers dependant upon how you view it).

Many good points made, but for some reason I can't get the "T-1000" trick out of my head:

Odo turns his hand into a spear and drives it through Data's body, knocking him out cold. Maybe...

But morphing to simply turn him off would be hilarious (assuming he knew about the off switch).
