Why the flagship?

An in-universe answer to the flagship question. In ST:Insurrection, it was stated that the Enterprise's appearance would be a vital show of force. Enterprise is usually the first responder to vital crisis throughout TNG.

So, everybody (Klingons, Romulans, etc) knows Enterprise ship is the flagship, and when it arrives the Federation means business.

Of course only thing left is to find proof that other alien races know Enterprise-D is a flagship... but I digress.

Tomalek (sp?) talked of displaying the Enterprise's burnt hulk over Romulus, so I think that's enough to say she was important. You don't capture the scout USS Unimportant to display over your homeworld.

I don't know if that is sufficient proof. Maybe displaying "burning hulk" of any Galaxy class ship over Romulus would be a political blow to the Federation.

I think the real proof is that the Ent-D is never used as a flagship in a military sense, except in the Duras episodes in TNG when they were short of ships anyway. ST:FC had Picard ordered away from the conflict, rather than Ent-E being a command center fighting the Borg. Sure they were worried Picard would betray them, but if Ent-E was really a crucial command center they would have replaced Picard like how Hansley came in for the cloaking device in TNG Pegasus.

So to the Federation, "flagship" probably means a symbolic gesture of the "best of the best" of the Federation rather than the Ent-E being some sort of command ship. If the Ent series was really a command ship, you'd see Admirals on it.

Well the USS John F. Kennedy CV-67 was considered the flagship for the US Navy. Its an old piece of shit carrier that can barely leave dock. The reason that is is the flagship is because its the ship that does all the "showboat" missions. It goes every year to Boston and NYC for fleet week so that everyone can go on tours and take pictures of it and stuff. It is by far not the most powerful and best ship, its a PR boat.
